Santiago is already being held on two life sentences for a series of armed robberies and a shooting committed in 2006 in three Florida counties. He was awaiting a trial for another armed robbery that could get him a third life sentence. Authorities say he has a history of mental illness in addition to violence.http://www.orlandosentinel.com/orl-b...,5864997.storyKISSIMMEE - An investigation of how an Osceola jail inmate obtained a gun this week produced its first arrest Friday.
A corrections officer, Michelle Hung, was arrested after midnight when she lied to detectives asking about how inmate Angel Santiago got hold of a loaded 9mm. pistol on Monday, according to the Osceola County Sheriff's Office.
"We brought in a lot of people to talk to ... and she lied," sheriff's spokeswoman Twis Lizasuain said of Hung, whom a tipster identified as an officer who transported inmates to court.
Santiago, 28, was serving two life sentences and facing a third at an upcoming trial when he tried to escape Monday evening by drawing a gun and taking a jail officer hostage, records show. Forcing the officer to go with him to the jail infirmary, Santiago ordered the unidentified officer to strip and exchange clothing with him, records show.
The inmate was dressed in the officer's uniform and the officer was dressed as an inmate when other officers confronted and disarmed Santiago, records show. The rescued officer later said Santiago had threatened to shoot him in the head, record show.
Santiago, who has a history of violent crimes and mental-health treatment, was transferred this week to a state prison unit for new inmates. He had been held for more than a year in the Osceola jail awaiting trial.
It could not be learned Friday night if Hung, 44, of Orlando, knew Santiago from taking him to court appearances.
The Sheriff's Office would not say what Hung told detectives that was considered a lie. She has been charged with filing a false police report. Bail was set at $1 million, records show. Such a bail amount is considered extraordinarly high, especially for a non-violent crime.
"We have a sincere interest at this point in a lot of people," Lizasuain said when asked if such a large amount indicated a special significance for Hung's arrest. " We haven't identified any suspects yet."
Booked briefly at the jail where she works, Hung was transferred to the Orange County Jail, where she remained Friday night. Arrested jail employees are transferred for their own safety so they will not be held with prisoners they supervised.
