The 26-year-old woman who was fatally shot in a San Antonio apartment along with her 2-year-old daughter was prepared to leave the man who is accused of killing them, the victim’s friends and mother said.
Courtney Gass and her daughter, Anika, who until October lived in Texas City, were killed, along with a family friend early Sunday morning. Gass’ boyfriend, Christopher Allgood, who also lived in the apartment, has been charged with one count of murder.
While San Antonio police have not identified the victims, Gass’ family confirmed that Courtney and Anika were killed. Friends said Monday that the third victim is Kevin Bones, a Texas City resident who was visiting Gass and Allgood during the holiday weekend.
Bones was remembered as a “free spirit.”
“If you were around Kevin you were having fun,” high school classmates Lisa McBee Molina said. Bones’ family lived in Costa Rica and was flying back to Texas on Monday night.
Gass’ mother, Judy Bradley, said her daughter was planning to leave Allgood and move in with friends near Austin because the couple’s relationship was abusive.
“She wanted to go,” Bradley said. “She had told me she was going to move up to Austin. I told her, ‘I will give you the money,’ but I never heard back.
“I just thought she blew it off.”
Several of Gass’ friends Monday confirmed her plans and said she had planned to leave San Antonio this week.
San Antonio police did not return calls, and the report from the case doesn’t indicate whether police are investigating the possibility that Gass’ plan to move might have triggered the shooting.
Bradley said her daughter and Allgood had a troubled relationship and showed court records that included at least one domestic violence claim in Galveston County.
Court records reviewed by The Daily News show that in 2006 Allgood was charged with violating a protective order, but that charge was dismissed.
In 2005, he was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, but that charge also was dismissed. The records available Monday didn’t give reasons for the dismissals.
Allgood, 30, spent 10 days in the Galveston County Jail in 2003 after a charge of aggravated assault was pleaded down to terroristic threats.
In 1996, Allgood was convicted of aggravated assault causing bodily injury and was given a deferred one-year jail sentence and probation, according to summaries of the court records.
County records also show that Allgood, who is a Texas City native, married Debra Kay Clifford in February 2008. There are no records on file showing the couple divorced.
For about three months before he got married, Allgood worked in The Galveston County Daily News composing department.
Gass and Allgood grew up in Texas City. Gass was the daughter of the owner of one of the city’s biggest plumbing firms, Dale Gass plumbing, and her uncle, Bobby Gass, is the pastor and founder of Baypoint Community Church.
Her family said she had an interest in photography and her work was prominent on her MySpace and Facebook Web site pages. Bones was supposedly in San Antonio to bring camera equipment to Gass.
Allgood, the son of a former Texas City police officer, was a musician and active in the area’s punk rock scene, friends of the couple said.
He moved to San Antonio last summer, and Gass followed in October with their daughter, her family said.
Police were called to the couple’s apartment complex in north San Antonio early Sunday. Police originally came to the complex after a security guard reported hearing gunshots and found Allgood in the parking lot with an AK-47. Allgood originally was detained by the security guard and was taken to jail to be charged with unlawfully discharging a weapon.
