    12-Foot Python Strangles Toddler

A 2-year-old girl was strangled Wednesday morning by a 12-foot pet python at a Sumter County home, according to sheriff's officials.

The fatal incident occurred at about 10 a.m. at a residence in the 1500 block of county Road 466 in Oxford, which is located about 60 miles northwest of Orlando.

The girl's parents were home at the time of the attack, but it's not known if the pet snake got loose or was being handled before killing the girl, who was bitten on the forehead, Sumter County sheriff's deputies said.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, pythons are a nonnative species to Florida, although some Burmese pythons have been found in parts of Florida.

An invasion of giant Burmese pythons in South Florida that made national headlines last year was "rapidly expanding" and could reach Central Florida, according to a University of Florida study.

"There's no part of this state that you can point at and say that pythons couldn't live here," researcher Frank Mazzotti said. "They're capable of incredible movement -- and in a relatively short period."

Most of the pythons were brought over as pets and then turned loose in the wild, he said.

Anyone who comes across a python is urged to call wildlife officials at 888-404-FWCC.

Wow, didnt see that one coming, NOT!!!, I never understand people who own large snakes , letting them wander around the house with small kids in it. Or keeping them inside homemade rickety ole cages. This one happened at 10AM in the morning, the snake got out of its cage and found a kiddie snack to eat while every one was sleeping. A 12-Foot Python , would have been like 4 times the size of the kid.

This is what the inside of a Pythons mouth looks like. They are armed with dozens of strongly recurved razor-sharp teeth.

The fatal incident occurred at about 10 a.m. at a residence in the 1500 block of county Road 466 in Oxford, which is located about 60 miles northwest of Orlando.

The snake apparently escaped from its cage overnight and strangled the girl, who was also bitten on the forehead, Sumter County sheriff's deputies said. The girl's father stabbed the snake and pulled his daughter away before calling 911, deputies said.
Some people are like Slinkies. They aren’t really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to my face when I push them down a flight of stairs.

An adult at the home woke up and found the pet snake wrapped around the girl, who was identified as Cheyenna Hare.
    [...]
The python is one of two snakes in the home -- the other is a 6-foot boa constrictor. Both snakes are alive, Carruthers said. Two other children also lived there.

Police said the python was kept in an aquarium.
    wtf?

Charles Darnell, who is the boyfriend of the girl's mother, said he stabbed the snake and called 911, according to Lt. Bobby Carruthers. The girl was dead when authorities arrived about 10 a.m.
The snake apparently escaped from its cage overnight and strangled the girl, who was also bitten on the forehead, Sumter County sheriff's deputies said. Charles Darnell, who owns the snake, stabbed the animal, which was wrapped around the girl's neck, and pulled the girl away before calling 911, deputies said.

"A 12-foot snake is kind of like having a truck sitting on your chest. They have enough power not only to asphyxiate you, but to break bones as well," said Harrison, who added that stabbing a python would not force the animal to release its prey.

Harrison suggested throwing alcohol down the snake's throat or running hot water over it to get it to release its prey.

Harrison urged owners to be careful with pet pythons.
    [...]
Harrison speculated that there are probably more pythons in Florida than anywhere else in the United States.
This is so horrific, I can't wrap my mind around waking up to find my child this way. The chaos that morning, two other kids there WTF, were these people thinking having a fuckn' Python in the home with a baby??? Try to reason that one and live with it. I hope these parents are charged to the full extent of the law. Unbelievable the stupidity of people. The way this baby girl went......fuck

So senseless. Rest in peace baby Shaiunna Hare.

We have a python in our home. I've also raised my daughters around all kinds of wildlife. Dogs can turn on anyone at anytime. I had a domestic bunny that was a vicious ball of fur and teeth. I've never been frightened of any animal like I was "Piglet" (the rabbit) I'll never allow another in my house.

Pythons make lovely pets if you educate yourself - just like any other pet.

    With all due respect, TG,
under any circumstance I don't think it's wise to have a Python in a home around children, even when you have it trained. I think some animals, outside of the domesticated type, should never be considered a pet in a home with children. That's just my opinion.
Police said the python was kept in an aquarium.
Besides, these people were negligent and careless, they had a 12 ft. Python in an aquarium and a 6 ft. Boa. You are just asking for a disaster when leaving a deadly type "pet", unsecured in a home with children. That IMO, is stupid behavior. I think you can appreciate what my point is here....what that poor baby went through her last moments, I just can't see it, don't want to think about it. And this was their 12 ft. pet snake....no can't reason that.

I understand your point and it would be interesting to see statistics on snakes that kill vs. dogs that kill children.

I imagine they will be vastly different as dogs are a very popular domesticated animal vs. 12 foot Pythons. Tho, Florida might make an exception.

These statistics ended in 2001 BUT it can be argued that ownership has increased for both sides, thus bolstering the conclusion more children are mauled to death by dogs than strangled by snakes.

Yeah, I figured that much with out the statistics. I have noted my opinion on dogs around babies too, but like I said, that's my opinion. People will continue to do what ever they want regardless of what I might think or others like me.

This has more to do with neglectful behavior on the parents part then the type of animal they chose as a pet around their children. Countless number of children have lost their lives due to stupid, irresponsible behavior of pet owners, most of them dogs. So I guess what I should say is, I HATE STUPID, NEGLIGENT PEOPLE.

Curious how the law will see it.

I've worked in the EMS field for the majority of my life, I think I'm very conscientious to things that promote a danger.

I also am a very realistic parent. To imply a parent who owns a pet other than a cat or a dog and God forbid a *gasp* snake is a parent without "reason" in their head is narrow minded at best.

@ Silva About twice that size!

Kidding - our ball python will only grow to 4-5' in length. Being a responsible pet owner, we researched what snake would fit our lifestyle and Ember is one of the coolest and most awesome pets we've owned!

How big is your python TG???

I am pretty much with Silva as far as pythons go. They are NOT a domestic pet. They are and will always be a wild animal. Especially any one over 3ft in length. I have seen snakes squeeze through some pretty tiny holes and under doors. it doesn't take much of an opening for them to get out. Beside that how many damn rats does a 12 foot python eat in a day??? Thats allot of food to feed a snake and how can you tell if its hungry?? your never really going to know till it chomps down on you and trys to eat your ass.

Ball Pythons are safer than dogs! Plus snakes do not eat every day. Ball pythons have no teeth as shown in the picture above.

I know I'm a despicable parent as demonstrated by the PPC, I let my children cross the street without an armed convoy and allow them to play outside with all the bugs and shit. DCFS should be knocking on my door at any time!

If you have a small one and its got no teeth, I don't see the harm in it TG. You have to admit a 12 footer with big ass razor sharp teeth doesn't belong around kids though. Even though they don't have poison there mouths carry all kinds of nasty ass cooties in them.

I admire your ability to expose your children to animals out side the traditional house pet, I just couldn't do snakes in my home, other wild animals for that matter. However, I do take my boys to the petting zoo here in town, and its a delightful experience for them away from the traditional Zoo animals.

LOL, you got me going there for a moment on the size....yikes!

I've had snakes and spiders as pets. They are not traditional pets. I rank them almost closer to plants than traditional pets (but far less deadly than most houseplants). They're enclosures can be almost as beautiful as art, they do not require daily interaction, they require little care (compared to traditional pets), and they are fun/interesting to watch when not being handled.

Aquariums are not at all unusual enclosures for snakes or any reptiles. Our jewel snake was always in an aquarium. Our python and boas were in old jewelry counters purchased from a K-Mart that was remodeling. I still have one stored away... just in case I get another snake. It's nothing but a glorified aquarium - upside down with sliding doors on it.

Like TG said, they make good pets BUT you have to be an educated owner and take common sense precautions... but that is the same as any pet.

Law enforcement officials remove an 8 1/2-foot-long albino Burmese python
from the home where it killed 2-year-old Shaiunna Hare

Darnell, 32, told authorities he last checked on the snake about 12:30 a.m. It had escaped its terrarium.

He put the snake in a bag and put it back inside the glass case. Then he put a quilt over the terrarium and tied something around the quilt. State law says pythons are supposed to be kept under lock.

Early in the morning, the snake escaped again.

Thanks DV, that 911 call is heartbreaking.

A detail I had not read that the snake actually got into the baby's crib. The snake had already escaped once, that the snake was not put under lock after the first escape explains it all.

    Just horrific.

Unhappy Two year old strangled to death by snake

Autopsy: Girl Killed By Snake Died From Asphyxiation

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. -- The details of an autopsy report released late Thursday afternoon revealed how a 2-year-old girl was killed by a python and the owner of the snake could soon face charges. The Department of Children and Families (DCF) is also now investigating the case for the sake of the two other children who lived in the house.

Shaianna Hare was asleep in her crib in her house near Oxford in Sumter County (see map) on Wednesday morning when the snake slithered into her room, wrapped around her and strangled her.

The snake is still alive and it will be rehabbed at a permitted facility while deputies, DCF and Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) all continue their investigation into the tragic case.

“At this point, the snake is evidence in the case. However, once the case has been concluded, it will be offered as a donation to the facility that is currently caring for it,” FWC investigator Janice Jones said.

With the autopsy completed, investigators can now say with little doubt that Shaianna died of asphyxiation, which is consistent with being crushed by an eight and a half foot python.

“The medical examiner’s preliminary report lists asphyxiation as the cause of death and confirmed the marks on the girl’s head and arms are bite marks,” Lt. Bobby Caruthers, of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, said at a press briefing in Bushnell on Thursday.

That's exactly what 32-year-old Charles Jason Darnell told Sumter County deputies he saw happen to his girlfriend's daughter Wednesday morning.

"I don't know, the baby's dead. A stupid snake got out in the middle night and strangled the baby," exclaimed a crying Charles Darnell during a call to 911.

"I never thought you could make a pet out of a snake. They're always looking for their next meal," neighbor Nick Nichols said.

Thursday, Eyewitness News learned there were some inconsistencies on when the python was last fed. By one account, it was two weeks and by another a month. Charles Darnell turned over his python and a smaller boa constrictor to FWC.

"Even though this was a tragic accident, there may be some liabilities involved," Caruthers said.

Those liabilities could involve child endangerment and either Darnell or Shaianna's mother, 19-year-old Jaren Hare, could be charged.

In addition to the sheriff's office case, DCF has opened its own case to determine if the home provided a dangerous environment and if there was proper adult supervision for Shaianna and Darnell's two children, who all shared the home.

It'll be the second investigation launched this year. The first alleged drug use and abuse. It was just closed last month.

Couple Charged In Death Of Toddler By Python

SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. -- A Sumter County couple was booked into jail Monday afternoon for manslaughter, third-degree murder and child abuse in the death of 2-year-old Shiuanna Hare.

The decision was made to charge the child's mother, 19-year-old Jaren Hare, along with her boyfriend, 32-year-old Charles Darnell, because the snake was not properly secured.

The mother reportedly turned herself in Monday afternoon, and Darnell was already in jail on an unrelated drug charge. Both Hare and Darnell are being held on $35,000 bond.

Jaren Hare Arrested After Python Bites And Kills 2 yo Shaiunna

A PREGNANT moher and her live-in boyfriend have been arrested for murder after their daughter was crushed to death by a pet python that crawled into her cot.
Two-year-old Shaiunna Hare died when the eight-and-half foot Burmese python crept into her crib.
It coiled around her, bit her and then squeezed her to death.
Shaiunna's mother, Jaren Hare and her boyfriend Charles Darnell have been charged with third degree murder, child abuse and manslaughter.
Assistant state attorney Peter Magrino said: "It's just a tragic set of circumstances that, due to the reckless conduct on behalf of adults, a small child lost her life."
The animal was not kept in a legally-required enclosure, had a history of escaping and was unregistered, it was said.
    [...]
According to police, Darnell noticed the snake in the toddler's crib and stabbed it with a meat cleaver until it released the child's body.
He then called 911 saying: "The baby's dead. Our stupid snake got out in the middle of the night and strangled the baby."
Hare, who lost a child to meningitis five years ago, was previously described by child services as "high all the time".
She and Darnell, who was described as "intemperate and foul-mouthed", were investigated after it was reported they were using and selling cocaine, ecstasy, crystal meth and marijuana.
The couple are due to appear in a Sumter County Court, Florida, tomorrow. They each face 15-year sentences.

Aquariums come in all sizes, I didn't see how many gallons the tank was supposed to hold, but I have a 150g in my kitchen that could house a pretty huge snake... personally I prefer the more manageable ball pythons and corn snakes, but I kept them in 40 gallon tanks comfortably. I thought pythons were illegal in FL because of the numbers taking over in the everglades.

They thought a hungry snake would never try to eat a kid. Think again.

The pet python that strangled a 2-year-old Sumter County girl 18 months ago hadn't been fed in about a month and had escaped its tank 10 times since its last meal — a road-kill squirrel, according to newly released documents.

Gypsy, the 8-foot-6-inch albino Burmese python, was most likely hungry when it escaped its terrarium and attacked Shaianna Hare in a crib, according to investigative documents examined by the Orlando Sentinel.

A review of reports in the July 1, 2009, tragedy show that the child's mother and the mother's boyfriend had kept the snake in violation of wildlife rules and apparently could not afford to feed it.
    [...]

The snake attack in the rural community of Oxford, about 60 miles northwest of Orlando, was believed to be the state's first instance of a non-venomous constrictor killing a child. The criminal case, likely to be tried this year, revolves around reckless behavior of the child's care-givers, Assistant State Attorney Pete Magrino said.
    [...]

The albino python, bought at a flea market about six years ago for $200, slithered through the doublewide trailer to the child's room after escaping from a mesh laundry bag with a baseball-sized hole in it.

The snake had slipped out of its tank twice that night.

"It's beyond stupidity," said Jim Peters, president of the Central Florida Herpetological Society, when informed of the large snake's feeding history and its unsecured enclosure, a 150-gallon glass aquarium with a quilt as a lid.

The snake, which weighed less than 13 pounds, was emaciated, said Andrew Wyatt, president of the United States Association of Reptile Keepers. A healthy python of that length should have weighed at least twice as much.

"You keep it hungry and don't secure it, you're asking for trouble," Wyatt said.

The python has recovered from a cleaver wound inflicted by Darnell and is in Fish and Wildlife's custody.

According to a death investigation by the state Department of Children & Families, Hare's mother, Sheryl, was concerned about her daughter's ability to care for her pet snakes, Gypsy and Dixie, a smaller Columbian red-tail boa.

Hare told a DCF investigator that a week before the python attack she offered to buy rats for the snakes because Hare and Darnell had neither jobs nor money. She said she also had offered to keep the snakes at her home or provide a sealed container.

    The offers were rejected.

According to sheriff's and DCF reports, the python was regularly handled — with adult supervision — by kids, including Shaianna, who showed no fear of the snake. Darnell told investigators the kids were not permitted to take Gypsy out of her tank or feed it and he likened it to a "loaded gun."
    [...]

"She was coming up due [for a feeding]," Darnell told sheriff's detectives. "But I don't think hunger would have been the motive. …There's no way that she could possibly in her mind think that she could eat that baby."

Sobbing during the interview, Darnell said his two older children, then ages 12 and 7, were watching "Family Guy" on TV and the snake was in its tank in that room when he went to bed about 11:30 p.m.

He awoke an hour later to use the bathroom and found the python in the hallway.

"I almost stepped right on her," he said.

Darnell said he scooped up the snake, stuffed it in the mesh bag and put it in the tank. He then walked to the toddler's room and checked on Shaianna then headed back to sleep.

When he awoke about 9:30 the next morning, he peeked in on the child and was aghast. The long yellow constrictor had escaped again and was wrapped around Shaianna's head. Its fangs were sunk in her forehead.

In her interview with detectives, Hare called Gypsy "tame." She shrugged her shoulders when a detective asked how she could tell if the snake was hungry. She said she thought the snake had escaped the tank "'cause it can."

"She might have been hungry," Hare said. "But I don't think she would come right out and do what she did."

Our girls were around a lot of odd/exotic pets, but none that were this size. They took to the Ball Python & Sugar Gliders quickly! But our animals were well fed, unlike the one in the story here.

IMO, they are right to charge these two in the death of this child and should nail them for abusing the animals as well!
Mercy to the cruel is cruelty to the innocent.

Justice and the law are 2 seperate issues!
