New year's boy fighting for life

CUYAHOGA FALLS: Camryn Jakeb Wilson, the area's first baby of the new year, struggled more than 15 hours to be born.

Now he's fighting for his life.

The baby's father, Craig Wilson, was arrested and charged with assaulting the infant, who was listed in critical condition Thursday at Akron Children's Hospital.

    http://www.ohio.com/news/top_stories/16668656.html

According to a report released Thursday, Cuyahoga Falls police were notified about 12:21 a.m. by hospital personnel that they were treating a 2-month-old boy with ''severe head and bodily injuries.'' The baby was brought to the hospital by his mother, Crystal Wilson.

''Subsequent investigation by the Cuyahoga Falls Police Department detectives revealed the father of the child, Craig Richard Wilson, had assaulted the child earlier in the evening . . . while baby-sitting at the family's residence in Cuyahoga Falls,'' according to the report.

Wilson, 28, of Wilson Street, was charged with felonious assault
and child endangering, both second-degree felonies.

Wilson was taken to the Cuyahoga Falls Jail, where he was released on bond — 10 percent of $25,000 cash — pending arraignment in Cuyahoga Falls Municipal Court.

The Wilson family was featured in a Beacon Journal story on the area's first baby of 2008, which reported ''Camryn checked into the world at 12:33 a.m. New Year's Day at Akron City Hospital.''

The 6-pound, 8-ounce baby was born about a week before he was due, after more than 15 hours of labor.

The Wilsons also have daughters Tabatha, 9, and Corrine, 13 months.

Y'know, why does the press say he was "babysitting" when he's the child's father? It's that kind of removal of parental responsibility that makes it so easy for fathers to hurt their kids. They're not "doing their damn job as a parent", they're "babysitting". I guarantee you that had this asshole been the mother, she would not have been referred to as "babysitting" her own kid.

    Just sayin'.

Douchebag dad kills infant son, maraca-style

New Year's baby's death shatters family, relationships

CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio (CNN) -- Camryn Jakeb Wilson was bathed in TV lights the day he was born, celebrated on the local news as Summit County's 2008 New Year's baby after his arrival at 12:33 a.m. on January 1.

Just 12 weeks later, he was bathed in warm water minutes after he quietly died in his mother's arms, the victim of shaken baby syndrome. Camryn's 9-year-old sister, Tabatha, asked why he needed a bath now.

"We have to get him ready to go to Jesus," a nurse softly replied. Tabatha took up a sponge to help. (cont'd)
    http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/08/15/...ef=mpstoryview

Fucked up statistic from the article:

The National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome estimates as many as 1,400 babies annually are injured or killed by shaking.

According to the center, 70 percent to 79 percent of people convicted of killing or hurting babies are men. The average age of perpetrators is 24, and 82 percent are either the parent of the victim or the live-in boyfriend of the mother.
Does Ohio have burning at the stake as a method of capital punishment?

Yeah, I read this one this morning. The story was originally posted here back in March when Camryn was still alive and fighting for his life.

If you read the whole CNN story, it's refreshing (and gut-wrenching) to read how responsible and together the mom seems. She's a recovering alcoholic, and she sounds like she's got her shit together.

She says that Camryn's the one to talk about, that mentioning the man (her husband) who did this is a waste of breath. She is divorcing him and hopes he stays in prison. And yet, despite her anger and pain, she included his family in the last days of Camryn, and his funeral, etc. Sounds like a woman with some straight priorities.

I wish her and her daughter (Tabitha) peace.

    Remembering Camryn Jakeb Wilson

I was thinking how little Camryn, New born baby of last year, 2008 would have been a year now. Sweet one, thinking about you and the possibilities of life had in store for you. It warms my heart that you knew love before leaving us. Rest in peace sweet prince.

    Shaken baby syndrome
Violently shaking an infant for just a few seconds can cause
    :

    • Brain injury leading to paralysis, mild to severe cognitive impairment, cerebral palsy
    • Blindness
    • Broken bones
    • Death

Normal activities such as bouncing a baby on one's knee, tossing it in the air or jogging with a baby on one's back do not cause shaken baby syndrome.

Camryn is why I came here. I fell in love with him way after he passed. He had to be the most perfect baby I have ever seen ( aside from my own of course!) That video gave me nightmares for weeks-it permiated my every thought. It was with Camryn that brought me to D"D because I began to read about more and more SBS cases which of course brought London Sherwood. I gotta tell ya-looking dead children, particularly babies, is so impacting. I mean Camryn's mother shared something so precious with all of us by making public-photos of her family's goodbye to him. His story of dying in her arms and being bathed afterwords in a warm bath. I agree with Ruby-she is a good woman-she has really stepped up and represented her son without hate or anger. She has even openly forgiven him, because that God willhandle his punishment from here on out. I do so admire that. Camryn Jakob Wilson will forever affect me...

So Happy Birthday to you Camryn. May you run with angels forever...

(CNN) -- The father of a New Year's Day baby pleaded guilty Thursday to killing the infant by violently shaking him.

Camryn Jakeb Wilson was the first baby born in 2008 in Summit County, Ohio,
Craig Wilson's guilty plea in Akron, Ohio, to murder and child endangering charges ended a yearlong saga surrounding the death of Camryn Jakeb Wilson, the first baby born in Summit County, Ohio, in 2008.

"This type of crime is always difficult to understand, but today I do hope that Camryn's mother has some closure and that today is one step toward healing," Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh said.

Camryn Jakeb Wilson is held by his parents Craig and Crystal Wilson of Cuyahoga Falls and his sister Tabatha, 9, as he sleeps at Akron City Hospital Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008 in Akron, Ohio. Camryn Jakeb was born at 12:33 am New Year's Day making him the first baby to be born in Akron in 2008

In Ohio, Craig Wilson, 29, confessed to police that he was frustrated after an argument with his wife over his ex-girlfriend and a child he had with her. He violently shook and squeezed his 10 week old son, Camryn, before laying him in the swing but hadn't intended to hurt the infant, he told police. As a result, the baby suffered traumatic brain injuries and bleeding in his eyes that caused his death. The case gained national attention because Camryn was a celebrated baby -- the first one born in Ohio in 2008.

Today, Wilson was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. As a foster mom, I'm extemely saddened that yet another child died from child abuse. As a U.S. citizen, I'm glad that the justice system worked -- and that this particular father took full responsibility for his actions. Many abusive parents try to place blame elsewhere instead of looking inward. If you are ever so frustrated with your baby that you want to shake him, please place the baby in a crib and leave the room. Call someone - anyone - to come over and watch the child for you. Otherwise, a moment's frustration can change both you and your child's life.

On Good Friday, with three generations gathered around the hospital crib of two-and-a-half-month-old Camryn Jakeb Wilson, the baby's mother made the hardest decision of her life.

Crystal Wilson, after hearing a grim report from doctors at Akron Children's Hospital, decided that she would authorize ending Camryn's life support.

''I am proud of her for thinking of him above herself,'' said Laura Twiddy, the baby's grandmother and Crystal's mother.

Twiddy said the life support was removed from the baby, who suffered severe brain damage and other injuries, on Tuesday evening.

Camryn, who was featured in a Beacon Journal story on Jan. 2 as the first area baby born in the new year, died at 8:17 p.m.

The baby's father, Craig Wilson, pleaded not guilty to murder late this morning in Cuyahoga Falls Municipal Court.

Wilson initially was charged with assault and child endangering after the baby was taken to the hospital on March 12 with ‘‘severe head and bodily injuries.’’ Police said an investigation found that Camryn had been in the care of Craig Wilson in the family's Cuyahoga Falls home when the injuries occurred.

While waiting for his arraignment by Judge Kim Hoover, Wilson covered his eyes and wept. He waived a preliminary hearing, which means the case will go straight to a grand jury.

Bond was set at $250,000 cash and Wilson was taken to the Summit County Jail.

Jon Sinn, Wilson's lawyer, said his client plans to ‘‘cooperate fully’’ with prosecutors. Sinn said Wilson was ‘‘devastated’’ by Camyrn's death and has the support of his family.

Doctors ''told Crystal there was no hope,'' said Twiddy, who lives in Doylestown. ''They didn't believe he could survive on his own. In their opinion, he would not have a quality of life.''

After the life support was removed, Crystal held her child, the grandmother said.

''I have to say he just snuggled up to her, it seemed,'' Twiddy said. ''He was so peaceful. He truly looked like he was asleep.''

On Monday, the family, including the parents of Craig Wilson, gathered at the baby's bedside for a ''dedication'' by Pastor Bob Marquis, a family member.

The purpose of the dedication, Twiddy said, was to hand the child over to God. ''If God is choosing to take him,'' she said, ''then we are dedicating his body to the Lord.''

The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office conducted an autopsy this morning. The cause and manner of death were listed as pending to allow for laboratory tests and review of hospital and police records. The tests might take two weeks or more, said Gary Guenther, an investigator with the medical examiner's office.

Funeral arrangements will be made by the Cox Funeral Home at 222 Norton Ave. in Barberton.

You can see in this pict were they opened the skull to drain the brain.

"It really is a tragedy," said Craig Wilson's defense attorney, Jonathan T. Sinn. "I mean, not only did Crystal and Craig lose a son, but Crystal lost a husband, and Craig's parents lost a son and a grandson. ... One day this was a happy, perfect family, and the next day it's been devastated."

Craig Wilson and Crystal Twiddy, both recovering alcoholics, met about four years ago in a softball league popular with Alcoholics Anonymous members. The couple beamed in engagement photos shot in a garden setting before they were married in September. It was the first marriage for both.

Craig, the machinist son of the Cuyahoga Falls High School wrestling coach and a former Mat Cats wrestler himself, became a father figure to Tabatha, Crystal's daughter from a previous relationship.

The newlyweds also became frequent caretakers to 1-year-old Corrine, a daughter Craig had with another woman. Family members said the couple's only source of conflict was Craig's interaction with Corrine's mother.

On March 12, the topic sparked a heated quarrel, according to a police report and family accounts. The couple hurled their wedding rings, along with profane insults, at each other. Crystal left with Tabatha to attend one of her regular AA meetings, leaving baby Camryn in the care of his father.

"Maybe they both could have used a meeting that night," Sinn observed.

When Crystal and Tabatha got home from the meeting March 12, Crystal immediately noticed that Camryn didn't look right in his baby swing. He was gasping for air but couldn't be wakened. After briefly speaking with an on-call doctor at Akron Children's Hospital, she scooped him up and rushed him there.

Camryn was critically injured, with bleeding inside his head and in the backs of his eyes, and several broken ribs -- some of which, according to the autopsy, turned out to be older injuries. Medical personnel at the hospital determined that the combination of injuries could only mean abuse.

When rib fractures are seen in a 10-week-old infant, "it's beating up," said Dr. Nicolas Krawiecki, a pediatric neurologist.

Craig Wilson was summoned to the hospital, where police questioned both parents separately. Early on March 13, the 5-foot-7-inch, 190-pound father was arrested after admitting that he had shaken and squeezed his baby out of frustration and anger toward his wife resulting from the argument over Corrine's mother, according to the police investigators' report.

The bleeding inside Camryn's head was catastrophic. The two sides of his brain were "like two telephone poles with the lines between them cut," a family member said a doctor told them. Camryn was blind and incapable of feeling someone touching him, he could not breathe on his own, and if he lived, he would never be aware of his surroundings or even be capable of thinking, family members said.

After almost two weeks of waiting for a miracle that would never come, Crystal Wilson decided to withdraw life support. She gave friends and family -- including everyone on Craig's side -- time to gather to say goodbye to the tiny boy with the big, sightless eyes. Various relatives took turns holding him as he gradually slipped away.

"They pulled together; they prayed together; they took baby Camryn off life support together," said Sinn, the Wilson family's longtime lawyer. "And that was a wonderful thing, that they were able to pull together like that despite Craig being alleged to have done these things."

Camryn's father was not among them as he remained in jail. Sheriff's deputies took Craig Wilson to the funeral home for a brief private viewing of the infant's body the night before the funeral.

But the family unity would not last. Buried with Camryn were multiple relationships that could not survive the grief, recrimination and legal machinations that have followed his death.

Crystal Wilson intends to divorce her husband of 11 months and is at odds with her in-laws.

"My anger is kicked in full load," she wrote on her private MySpace page. "I don't care what Craig's family members think. He did this to my son. May he get what he deserves! Maybe people should talk more about Camryn than Craig. Craig's name has no worth to even be mentioned."

The autopsy report, obtained by CNN, found Camryn had multiple rib fractures, including several that apparently were incurred on one or more previous occasions.

"The question becomes: If that autopsy is accurate, if this child has been severely injured to the point that his ribs were fractured on prior occasions, multiple occasions, how come no one knew that?" Sinn said.

If Camryn's caregivers didn't pick up on his earlier rib fractures, neither did medical personnel trained to look for signs of child abuse. Camryn had been to Children's Hospital several times during his short life -- including earlier on the day he was fatally injured -- for well-baby checks and immunizations. No doctor or nurse ever noted broken ribs or signs of unusual pain in the infant, family members said.

"I lost my job because of this, because I couldn't work enough hours. Now I have to move into a smaller place," Crystal said. "It's horrible. It's a whole life change." And the consequences in such circumstances extend beyond the immediate family, Saros said.

Crystal Wilson's mother -- Camryn's grandmother, Laura Twiddy -- is angry at Craig but is trying to keep perspective.

"I can't have HATE eat me up and beat me down. I can't live like that," she wrote on her MySpace page. "I will have to one day forgive him so that I might find peace."

Peace of a sort can be found near the back of Stow Cemetery, where birds chirp in the trees above a freshly carved marker bearing a photograph of a big-eyed baby boy. The plot where Camryn now lies beneath that stone was donated to Crystal Wilson by a kind relative: Janet Wilson, Camryn's great-grandmother. On his father's side.

This is why AAA says not to hook up with other recovering alcoholics. Then there is the older injuries that were found in the Autopsy, so it was happening the whole time the baby was in the home.

This is from the autopsy report, the new fractures are the black dots and the red ones are old healing ones.

Holy Shit this whole thing made me cry too.

This one hits home for me because I am the extremely proud uncle of a New Years Baby. (Well OK 15 minutes PAST New Years but you get my point, I blame SIL)

Connor was the first baby born in Walworth County Wisconsin, in 2004 and my brother and SIL were SO very happy, because it is such a rare thing, to either be born ON NYD or to even be the first baby in a County in any given year....

This Alcoholic selfish prick had no idea how lucky he was.....

This guy should be killed in prison for what he did to his son.....

And all because he got into an argument with this poor childs mother over a different child.

What a FUCKING waste of taxpayer funded oxygen you are asshole......

    Just sayin'.
My husband gets PISSED if someone refers to him as a babysitter when he takes the kids somewhere or is home with them if I run an errand or something. PISSED! He's normally a quiet guy....but he sure opens his mouth then and says "um...NO...I am their DAD!". And it DOES make him feel like people think Dads are are in some way not connected. That may be true for some, I suppose...that is really sad.

What does it say about People when you even have to ask about a PSA about shaken Baby Syndrome?

They should already have enough sense NOT to shake the baby in the first place.....

The 2 most basic things about having a Baby:

    1. Don't shake the Baby

    2. Don't drop the baby.

And People aren't smart enough to FIGURE THAT OUT......

I doubt the auto club cares. LOL Assuming you mean Alcoholics Anonymous, that statement is misleading.

Members of AA are perfectly free to hook up with whoever they wish. There are only a couple of caveat in relationships and are not rules (but generally accepted and followed by members):
    1) You should do not start a new relationship in the first year of recovery... with ANYONE: in or out of the program. This is the most crucial time of recovery and your time and effort is best spent working on yourself and not relationships. The emotional turmoil of this time period makes one especially vulnerable to bad decisions and being preyed upon by those with little or no scruples.
    2) You also should not form romantic relationships within the boundaries of the sponsor/sponsee relationship. That's like fucking your priest (my words).

There are no exclusions in AA about your romantic or sexual choices. Just recommendations for the first year and the type of people/situations to avoid in general... all based in common sense and practical application of the principles.

Recovering alcoholics well on the road to recovery can make excellent partners... especially for others in recovery.

Just wanted to clarify that a bit.

This guy shook his kid because he was mad at his wife following an argument about his ex and kid with her? What the FUCK does that have to do with killing this baby??? I really hope this thread is the saddest thing I read all day. :(

My dad told me that they even discourage males sponsoring females and vice versa.
