LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Metro Police have discovered what they describe as the largest hazardous waste dump in Louisville history late Wednesday afternoon.

All the chemicals are believed to come from more than 200 meth labs. The trash was found in a rural creek bed off Moorman Road near Dixie Highway.

"Someone's been dumping here for quite a while. There is probably 200-plus individual labs here," said Sgt. Stan Salyards of Metro Narcotics.

"It's probably someone who lives close enough to know it's rural here. They are smart enough to know now since we have educated the public on what to look for. They aren't going to leave it in their garbage. They are going to try to dump it," Salyards said.

With help from firefighters and the health department, the Metro Police Narcotics Unit spent the afternoon picking up all the waste from the creek bed below the road.

"It can be very dangerous. You have acids, bases... Both can burn anyone. You have gasses generated here which produce hydrogen chloride gas, which no one wants to breathe," said Salyards.
