Joseph Brooks, songwriter and movie director, is led away by police after his arrest for alleged rape and sexual assault of women while they auditioned for movie roles in his apartment, New York City.

A New York City prosecutor says Oscar-winning songwriter and director Joseph Brooks has been charged with rape and sexual assault.

Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau says details will be discussed at a news conference Tuesday.

Police said previously that at least four women accused Brooks of performing sex acts on them while they auditioned for movie roles, reports CBS station WCBS-TV in New York City.

Brooks allegedly seduced the women through Craigslist web postings and lured them to his upper East Side apartment with promises of parts in his next movie, sources said.

Brooks won the Oscar for Best Original Song for the 1977 ballad "You Light Up My Life." The song reached #1 on the US popular charts and also won him a Golden Globe Award and an Authors and Publishers Award.

He also wrote and directed the "You Light Up My Life" romantic comedy. It's about a comedian who has a one-night stand with a director.

Brooks' attorney, Jeff Hoffman, did not immediately return a call requesting comment.

The women read an online ad placed by the director, Joseph Brooks, applied for the audition "and thought this was their chance to become a big star," prosecutor Lisa Friel said.

Instead, once the women were in Brooks' Manhattan apartment, he plied them with wine and forcibly raped them or used threats and coercive behavior to make them have sex with him, prosecutors said

Songwriter Joseph Brooks found dead; suicide suspected

Academy Award-winning songwriter Joseph Brooks was found dead Sunday of an apparent suicide in his Manhattan apartment, police said. Brooks, 73, was awaiting trial on charges of molesting women who were lured to his apartment for supposed acting auditions. He pleaded not guilty to rape and other charges.

Police spokesman Paul Browne said Brooks was found in his Upper East Side apartment around 12:30 p.m. by a friend with whom he had planned to have lunch.

Brooks was found with a plastic dry-cleaning bag around his head and a towel wrapped around his neck, Browne said. A hose attached to a helium tank was hooked up to the bag, he said. It was not immediately clear how long Brooks had been there.

The medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Police said a suicide note was found but they didn't reveal its contents.

Brooks won the Academy Award for best original song for the 1977 Debby Boone ballad You Light Up My Life and directed a related movie. He also won a Grammy for the song.
