Police seek second 'person of interest' in UNC death

This is pretty big news around here and with the picture they were able to get from the ATM hopefully they'll get these asshats soon.

CHAPEL HILL, NC -- A shadowy figure in the back seat of an SUV in surveillance photos is a second "person of interest" in the slaying of the University of North Carolina student body president, police said Monday.

Police on Saturday released photos taken by an ATM camera that show a young man driving a sport utility vehicle possibly using one of Eve Carson's ATM cards in the Chapel Hill area.

A large, shadowy form appears in the back seat of the vehicle, which police say may have been Carson's.

Carson, 22, was found shot to death early Wednesday in a suburban neighborhood near the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus. Her Toyota Highlander was found the next day in another neighborhood to the west, close to where she lived with roommates.

Investigators still have no motive in the case and urge individuals to call police at 919-968-2760 or Crime Stoppers at 919-942-7515. Callers can remain anonymous if they wish.

The University of North Carolina system Board of Trustees is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.

Atwater Gets Life in Eve Carson Murder
A Durham man will spend the rest of his life in federal prison for the death of the popular University of North Carolina student body president. Demario Atwater was sentenced to two life sentences and three 10-year sentences in connection with the 2008 murder of Eve Carson.
Atwater, 22, is the oldest of two defendants accused in the Carson case. Laurence Alvin Lovette was 17 at the time of the crime.

Judge James Beatty sentenced Atwater to life on the charge of kidnapping resulting in death and 10 years for discharging a weapon resulting in death. He also sentenced him to life on carjacking charges and two additional 10-year sentences on federal weapons charges.

The judge also ordered Atwater to pay restitution, as required by law, but said it was unlikely that Atwater would ever been released from prison.

During the sentencing hearing, Atwater addressed the Carson family.

"I'm sorry for everything that's happened," he said. "No matter what the court did today it would be far from anything I should receive."

Lovette is still facing murder, kidnapping and robbery in state court.

Police said Atwater and Lovette kidnapped Carson from her home in Chapel Hill, forced her into her SUV and forced her to withdraw $1,400 from ATM machines. Carson was shot five times with a small caliber handgun and once with a sawed-off shotgun.

NC man guilty in murder of UNC student leader
    HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (AP) -
An Orange County jury has found Laurence Lovette guilty of murdering University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student body president Eve Carson in 2008.

The jury announced its verdict Tuesday morning, finding Lovette guilty of first-degree murder. He showed no emotion as the verdict was read.

Lovette was sentenced to life in prison without parole. He was not eligible for the death penalty because he was a minor when the crime was committed.

Prosecutors say Lovette and Demario Atwater abducted Carson, of Athens, Ga., from her home in March 2008 and forced her to withdraw $1,400 from automated teller machines. Investigators say Carson was shot five times before her body was dumped on a Chapel Hill street.
