Parents charged with child neglect for not getting their pre-schoolers STDs treated.

Florence, SC - Police arrested the parents of two young girls, who were sexually assaulted and infected with gonorrhea. Officers said the actions of the parents, throughout the situation, left them no other choice but to charge them.

The solicitor said the parents waited to take their 4- and 5-year-old daughters to the hospital, allowing the disease to spread. He also said they failed to provide a safe place for the girls, to prevent them from being sexually assaulted.

Thursday morning, the mother and father went to the Dillon Police Department for questioning. After officers talked with them, they charged the parents with two counts of unlawful neglect toward a child. According to the police report, their 4- and 5-year old daughters were sexually assaulted at an apartment in Dillon, but they're not sure when.

Officers say the mother took the five year old to the hospital, after the little girl complained of pain. She tested positive for gonorrhea. The doctor then examined her 4-year-old sister and gave her the same diagnosis.

"What really bothered me was the fact that the mother had not done anything to help these young girls before she finally took one to the doctor and it should have been obvious especially from what the doctor has told us that care should have been gotten much sooner," said Fourth Circuit Solicitor Jay Hodge.

And NOW they have discovered that the girls older sibling, a 14 year old girl, has also tested positive for an STD. She has Chlamydia.

Maybe it is just me, but from the article, I don't see what the parents did. They didn't rape the kids, nor it seems were they clear on what actually happened. So it wouldn't really have made much sense to take them to hospital as it was. Perhaps I missed something, but there seems to be little they are at fault for.

Oh, i dunno, maybe not doing the girls' laundry often enough to notice the foul vaginal discharge and abnormal bleeding that accompanies gonorrhea infection in their children's underwear?

Prepubescent girls don't have vaginal secretions to speak of. If they're so neglected that their parents are not noticing the foul stench of advanced (and the doctors called it "advanced") gonorrheal infection or the accompanying vaginal bleeding, then they are extremely poor parents indeed. Not to mention that gonorrhea HURTS. Prepubescent girls with gonorrhea hurt so badly they can't urinate without severe pain, even in early stages. For the parents not to have noticed there was a severe problem is beyond negligent and into the realm of not even possible. I suspect the parents knew exactly why the kids were in pain and smelled awful, and didn't do a damn thing until the little one was so sick there was no other alternative. She'll probably be sterile herself, thanks to her parents.

Also, decent parents pay attention to their children's emotional health. Little girls who are being sexually abused are not emotionally healthy. These parents were not paying attention, or else they were causing the injuries themselves. Sexual abuse that can result in gonorrhea is usually intercourse, so they were totally unaware that their tiny daughters were being raped. Children that young bleed when raped. Obviously nobody was doing laundry, or nobody cared.
