Janie Hampton killed while teaching 13 yr. old son how to park car

Authorities have released the name of a woman fatally injured while teaching her 13-year-old son how to park a vehicle.

According to the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office, Janie Mae Hampton, 40, of 201 Powell Mill Road, was struck by her own vehicle Monday evening while instructing her juvenile son how to park. She was transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Just after 8:30 p.m., Spartanburg Public Safety officers responded to Crown Pointe Apartments to investigate the collision. According to preliminary investigation results, officers think Hampton exited the vehicle her son was driving while it was still in motion, and she became pinned between that vehicle and another parked vehicle.

The vehicle her son was driving continued in reverse, striking one of the buildings in the apartment complex.

The Public Safety Department does not anticipate filing any charges in the incident.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A South Carolina woman was killed while teaching her son how to drive a car.

Authorities in Spartanburg say Janie Hampton was trying to show her 13-year-old son how to parallel park. She got out of the car to direct him, but as he backed up, she became pinned between the car he was driving and another car.

Investigators say the car didn’t stop rolling until it hit a nearby building. Hampton was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

My question to you is would you teach your 13 yr. old to parallel park at night time? I would during the day but not at night

Still daytime in Texas in the summer time at that time of night.

Still, this boy will feel guilt for a long, long time.

Why would you teach your 13 year old to parallel park AT ALL? Sounds like the kid didn't even really know how to drive in reverse or use the brakes?

It doesn't take 3 years to learn to drive. 13 seems WAY too young to be left unattended behind the wheel of a moving car.

I don't think it's inherently irresponsible to teach a 13 year old how to drive. But to do so while not even observing basic safety yourself (exiting the car while in motion) is just moronic.

I feel bad for the kid.

maybe someone had a medical condition that required him to take charge in case if no one is there?

    who knows....

    but this seems somewhat confusing:

According to preliminary investigation results, officers think Hampton exited the vehicle her son was driving while it was still in motion, and she became pinned between that vehicle and another parked vehicle
Okay, was she behind the car, or to the right/left of it?i can see how she may have become pinned between her car and another if she was to the right/left of her own vehicle, and i can see why her car continued to roll down until it hit a building only because her child probably freaked out...

i guess we'll have to wait and see.

I feel sorry for the kid too and the dead mother. I used to let my kid drive my car around empty parking lots before he was even thirteen. They roll up the streets around here about nine o' clock every night so there wasn't much to worry about. The parallel parking was another story, we did not attempt that. I couldn't hardly stand doing that even after he had been thru driver's ed.
