A 42-year-old woman remained Tuesday in the Bexar County Jail, accused of
abandoning her girlfriend’s toddler at an East Side garage this weekend, authorities said.
Police arrested
Stacy Staley on Monday and charged her with endangering
16-month-old Melvon Bolden after the toddler was
found alone Saturday in an alley 3 miles from his home. Staley was being held in lieu of $20,000 bond.
Authorities said Staley and her girlfriend, 21-year-old Evelyn Ellison, had an argument Friday morning and
when Ellison returned home from work later that day, neither Staley nor her son were there.
Ellison told police she
waited to report her son missing until Saturday morning.
But before she did, another woman, Elsa Rhyme, had called police at 7 a.m. Saturday to tell them she
found Melvon wearing only a diaper and walking down an alley near her apartment.
“I just saw this precious little baby,” she said. “He had just learned how to walk.”
Rhyme said she took the child inside her apartment, where she bathed him and then placed a makeshift diaper on him — one fashioned out of a towel and duct tape.
She told police when she looked around for the toddler’s parents,
she found a stranger sleeping in her apartment building’s detached garage. Rhyme said her son, Scott, often allows transients or friends to stay in the garage.
After she failed to wake the man up, she called police to report she found Melvon, according to police. When police arrived, the man was gone.
Rhyme’s son later told police that
the toddler was with a woman and a man, who asked if he could use the garage for “personal time” with his female friend. It was unknown when the woman left the toddler with the man at the garage.
Police were able to identify Melvon due to a hospital bracelet he was wearing. He had been hospitalized for a fever a few days earlier.
After being evaluated at a local hospital, Melvon was returned to his mother.
