A Rifle resident has been arrested by Pitkin County authorities for allegedly breaking a a local infant’s ribs and sending her to the hospital.
Mason Levi Martin, 21, faced a district court judge on Friday and was advised that he is likely to be charged with child abuse resulting in serious injury — a felony.
The child, a girl born earlier this year, was reportedly taken to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs last weekend. She was then transferred to Children’s Hospital in Denver. Doctors there said her injuries, allegedly including broken ribs and evidence of ribs broken in the past, were consistent with child abuse and showed signs of earlier abuse.
A warrant for Martin was issued Thursday night. His relationship with the alleged infant victim has not been disclosed, nor have authorities publicly speculated as to how she was injured.
The alleged offense occurred here in Pitkin County.
Martin is being held at the county jail on $10,000 bond. The state public defender represented him at Friday’s hearing. He is due to return to court Monday morning.
