CLEARWATER – A Clearwater man police say was involved in an early-morning shooting that sent a person to the hospital was arrested about an hour later when he arrived at a scheduled court appearance.
According to police, Jerome Lowe, 24, of the 1700 block of Fulton Avenue, drove by his estranged girlfriend's residence at around 7 a.m. and shot Ricky Lewis, the woman’s grandfather, while Lewis was outside in front of the home. Lowe fled the scene in a vehicle; Lewis was transported by ambulance to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Lowe showed up for a court appearance shortly after the shooting, and he was taken into custody without incident, said Clearwater public safety spokeswoman Elizabeth Watts.
Lowe was booked into the Pinellas County Jail this afternoon and faces felony charges of aggravated battery with a firearm, domestic battery by strangulation and false imprisonment.
Lowe’s court appearance, a pre-trial session, was scheduled for 8:30 a.m., courts spokesman Ron Stuart said. The appearance related to Lowe’s arrest Dec. 21, 2008, when he was charged with fleeing and eluding, resisting arrest without violence, possession of marijuana, driving with a suspended license and aggravated battery.
Authorities say today's shooting apparently stems from a battery Lowe committed against his estranged girlfriend Thursday.
