ATHOL — A 22-year-old local man who was
baby-sitting his girlfriend’s child was arraigned in court today in the alleged rape of the 2-1/2-year-old girl.
He also allegedly set the child’s blanket on fire.
Christopher C. Mundell, of 334 Crescent St., was arraigned on six charges in Orange District Court before Judge David S. Ross, including
rape of a child by use of force, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (knife) on a child under 14, attempting to commit a crime, destruction of property valued at more than $250, possession of Klonopin and aggravated assault and battery. He was being held on $250,000 cash or $2.5 million surety. He is scheduled for a June 15 pretrial hearing.
Police said the child’s mother called 911 at 1:50 this morning from her Main Street house. Police found the woman holding her daughter when they arrived, and the girl had about a 1-1/2-inch slash in her upper thigh, according to Police Chief Timothy C. Anderson.
Chief Anderson said police arrested Mr. Mundell after they observed he had a knife tucked into his shoe.
The child was taken to Athol Memorial Hospital for treatment of her wound. Authorities said the wound was not life-threatening. An examination of the girl determined she had been raped, Chief Anderson said. The child was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center — University Campus in Worcester, for treatment of injuries police said were the result of rape.
Chief Anderson said Mr. Mundell began to lose control when the booking process began in the police station. He allegedly threatened two police officers.
“He said he was going to find a gun and kill them all,” Chief Anderson said.
Mr. Mundell was highly intoxicated, and had marijuana in his possession, according to Chief Anderson.
