As fists flew and gunfire erupted around her at MacGregor Park on Sunday, police said the pregnant woman was trying to usher her family to safety in the moments before someone cracked her skull with a baseball bat.

Melissa Spriggs, 27, died Tuesday at Ben Taub General Hospital from the injuries she suffered at the south Houston park. Nearly three months pregnant, she and her boyfriend had planned to share the news soon, relatives said. The woman's killer is still at large, the Houston Police Department said.

Anonymous tips led police to arrest Paul Lavallais at a southwest Houston apartment complex about 11 p.m. Friday. Lavallais, who is being held Saturday on $50,000 bail, is charged with murder in the death of Melissa Spriggs, 27, said Sgt. M. Dillingham of HPD's homicide division.
