A DeSoto mom is upset that a school official paddled her 12-year-old son so severely that she said the punishment left large red and purple bruises on his buttocks, KXAS-TV has reported.

Noemi Arevalo says she never gave permission for the paddling and had instead requested to speak to the principal. When her son Jose Flores came home from school that day, she said the injuries were so severe that she took her son to the doctor and called police, the television station reported.

“I couldn't believe it, that they did that to him in school," Arevalo said.

A McCowan Middle School student, Jose, said he was caught shooting rubber bands in class last week and was asked if he wanted to be paddled or suspended.

"They asked me what I wanted and I said, 'Swats,' but they never asked my mom,” Flores told the television station. Flores said he was paddled four times.

"I kept on trying to turn around,” he said. “I was crying. And he was like, 'If you don't turn around and let me do the last one, I'm going to have to do it all over again.'"

The DeSoto Independent School District told the television station that the mother and son chose corporal punishment, and that a second school staffer observed the paddling. "The corporal punishment was administered in accordance with district policy," the DeSoto ISD said in a written statement.

I dunno, but I think I'd choose the swats over the suspension, especially if I remember how my parents would punish me if I were to be suspended. And really, he had to have done more than just shoot the rubber bands. Believe me, I'd done that and even more before I was ever sent to the principle's office.

Man not me! Free day home from school! But I was a juvenile delinquent, so....

The mother has every right to be angry. Unless I sign some sort of release at the beginning of the school year, nobody better lay a finger on my child.

DeSoto school administrators defended the paddling of a 12-year-old boy Thursday, even though a photograph showed it left large red and purple bruises on his buttocks.

Jose Flores says he asked if he wanted to be paddled or suspended after he was caught shooting rubber bands.

Jose Flores, 12, a student at McCowan Middle School, admits he got caught shooting rubber bands in class last week.

He said he got called to the office and given a choice: Paddling or suspension.

"They asked me what I wanted and I said, 'Swats,' but they never asked my mom,” Flores said.

His mother, Noemi Arevalo, said an assistant principal did call her but that she never gave permission for the paddling and instead asked to talk the main principal.

Flores said he was paddled four times.

"I kept on trying to turn around,” he said. “I was crying. And he was like, 'If you don't turn around and let me do the last one, I'm going to have to do it all over again.'"

When her son arrived home from school, he showed his mother his severe bruises.

"At first, I started crying because I was sad,” Arevalo said. “I couldn't believe it, that they did that to him in school."

His mother showed NBCDFW a photo of his buttocks after the paddling, covered with red and purple bruises.

The DeSoto Independent School District issued a written statement, insisting the mother did give permission, and that the paddling was done appropriately with a second school staffer observing.

"The corporal punishment was administered in accordance with district policy," the statement said. "The parent and student elected corporal punishment over suspension."

The student’s mother said the bruising was so severe, she took her son to the doctor and called police.

Considering the child chose the swats, I don't see anything wrong with school spanking if, and only if, the mother had signed a release prior to this. It's ultimately the parents decision if the school hits their kids or not.

Had it been me, I would only take the swats under the agreement that my parents not been notified of it, but that's cuz I knew I'd get worse at home, and my parents would have told them to go ahead, spank me and suspend me. Then I would have spent my day of suspension in hell.

Although, the deliverer of the swats went overboard by leaving welts and bruises. They should not have hit the child hard enough to do that.

while I don't agree with the school hitting a child, the kid made a choice and now that mom is mad, he does the whole "they didn't ask my mommy" thing.

I also cannot see suspension for shooting rubber bands. Detention or even in school suspension, but not out of school.

Fuck me! This kid is junior high and his mom is running around with picture of his bruised ass?! I can see if he were like 6-but junior hihg? That is a whole new kind of embarassment.

I don't even know why there is such a thing as "paddling" for punishment in schools. What the fuck is this, Little House on the Prairie? No mother fucker is administering physical punishment to that degree on my child-but me!

Stupid ass school system is opening themselves up to all kinds of fucked up!

It is a knee kerk reaction to all the articles we have seen lately of abusers in trusted positions, i.e. teachers, pastors, child-care workers, etc. I am not surprised, actually. It is hard to trust anymore with so many stories of people we should normally be able to trust turning out to be pedos and abusers.

I think if more of these kids got paddled (reasonably not excessively) and the other kids had to watch it .... I think someone should teach these kids some manners. I always thought a paddeling was good for the one whose ass got paddled and the 10 others who had to watch it thinking if they stepped out of line again it could be their ass being paddled.

Ah, brings back memories of public hangings. Afraid those weren't much of a deterant either. The ones it would affect, are the ones who probably wouldn't cross the line to begin with. And the ones that would, it would just add to their "rep". So, they wouldn't care if youo did it front of the whole town.

Swats! Big fucking deal. I got more swats in 6th, 7th and 8th grades than I could count. From several different teachers. Hard ones! Did they hurt? Yes. Was it embarrassing, standing in front of the class, stiff legged, holding my ankles, while the teacher nailed me? Oh, yes. Did I deserve the swats? Again, yes. Did it get my attention? It certainly did. Did I run home, crying to mommy and daddy, and tattling on the teacher? You've got to be kidding. Had I done that, my dad would have asked me how many swats I got from the teacher, and given me that many more, X 2...and, he and my mother would probably have contacted the teacher, apologized, and had the teacher over for dinner.

I was a disruptive little fucker and deserved much more than I got. Do I resent the disciplinary action that was taken by those teachers, today? Not at all. I never have resented it. I knew I deserved it. I got caught doing what I knew I shouldn't be doing, and I knew the consequences of getting caught.

If you are one of those parents whose little darling has a disciplinary problem, yet, is undeserving of corporal punishment, period, and doesn't think a teacher should have the right to reasonably discipline a child under their supervision, maybe you should relieve the system of this responsibility and home school your own fucking brat.

I got paddlings in school. (I know what a shocker!)I never got bruises, I think that's where the guy blew it. That's corporal punishment. hell CPS will remove your kids for less.
My principal had an oar mounted in his office. It was HUGE! he drilled holes in it and told everybody it was so it would swing faster through the air and hurt more. Looking back on it I doubt he ever used it, but it was effective.

They should discuss with the parents before paddling. And 4X??? err, wtf.
yeah he was outta line. it is almost like he got off on it. They should look closely at his kids.

I would focus more on the teachers that are screwing the kids .
