RIVERVIEW -- He took her in. He supported her and her mother. In turn, a teenager masterminded his murder -- and killed his roommate in the process -- just to score some cigarettes and cash.
That's the allegation from police who painted Alicia Marie Hartner, 18, as the leader of three Woodhaven young people charged Tuesday with killing her mother's former boyfriend and his longtime business partner and roommate Wednesday in the 20000 block of Coachwood, then torching the home to cover their crime.
Police alleged Hartner recruited her live-in boyfriend, Michael James Wellwood II, 19, and friend Phillip Aaron Morris, 22, because she knew Dennis Langley, 62, had large amounts of cigarettes and cash in his house from his job as a self-employed distributor of vending machines. They didn't plan on running into John "Jack" Mascow, 62, said Riverview Police Detective Lt. Clifford Rosebohm Jr.
"It was a contrived event," he said. "It was the young lady's idea."
The trio, who face life in prison for first-degree murder and several felonies, were arraigned in 27th District Court in Wyandotte. The three, who lived in Williamsburg Square Apartments, remain jailed.
The three went to Langley's house on Wednesday and were surprised by Mascow, Rosebohm said. They beat, stabbed and shot him, police said. Next, they moved to the garage and stabbed Langley in the skull and liver. They took about $2,000 and a large amount of cigarettes, as well as Langley's white work van, police said.
