San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies on Friday arrested a Highland man on charges of child abuse for forcing his five children to live in a van, authorities said.
Deputies say they responded to an argument in the 7400 block of Lynwood Way in Highland and an investigation concluded that Genaro Lopez, 41, was forcing his family to live in a van.
Lopez refused to allow the five children, whose ages ranged from 3 to 16 years old, and their mother to leave the van, other than to go to school, authorities said Sunday. The children used the bathroom right outside the vehicle, the sheriff's statement said.
The broken-down van, parked in front of the family's former residence, had no beds, clothing, food or hygiene items, authorities said. The family had lived in it for two months, authorities said.
The children didn't tell anyone because Lopez threatened to kill their mother, the statement said.
Lopez was booked into the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.
