My twins constantly had bruises and scratches - from each other! They have little control as babies and they couldn't be left close to each other.
BUT they never got bruises on the cheeks. They aren't THAT strong. Chins, foreheads, eyebrows... areas where a rattle whack pinched skin against bone. and then only light bruises. You gotta apply some pressure to get that kind of mark on such soft area.
I'm going with the adult hand squeezing the face... and not in a "You're so cute!" wway. No way any baby did it to another or himself.
And their cat is dirty looking. All clumpy haired. Only time our cat ever looked like that was when it was deathly ill.
