Ohio Parole Board gets it right and denies Rose Yusko parole

Rose Yusko has been denied parole again for her 1983 attempted murder conviction in one of Summit County's most notorious cases of child abuse.

The decision by the Ohio Parole Board will keep Yusko, 62, in state confinement at least until her next scheduled parole hearing in 2012, prosecutors announced today.

Yusko and her boyfriend, Peter Cook, were convicted in separate trials more than two decades ago for beating, burning and starving Cook's then-12-year-old daughter, Tara Cook.

Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh, whose office opposed the release of Yusko in April 2004 when the parole board initially was prepared to release Yusko, said the case was ''the worst instance of child abuse Summit County has ever seen.''

Walsh said Yusko and Cook, who lived together in Stow in 1983, abused the victim ''to the point of being one breath away from death.''

The child was admitted to a hospital in June 1983 weighing only 40 pounds, with burns and open sores over 15 percent of her body from cigars and cigarettes, Walsh said.

The abuse was so perverse, Tara's case made national headlines. She later received a $1.3 million judgment against the Summit County Children Services Board for not protecting her.

Yusko, who has multiple sclerosis, is hospitalized in the state's Corrections Medical Center in Columbus, according to state prison records.

She originally was sentenced Dec. 19, 1983, to 181/2 to 55 years in prison for attempted murder, felonious assault, kidnapping and child endangering.

Cook, who was sentenced to 12 to 45 years in prison for felonious assault, kidnapping and child endangering, was released from Grafton Correctional Institution in June 2004 after serving 20 years for his crimes.

Tara survived her ordeal, Walsh said, and is thriving with her husband and family in Summit County.

"Yusko was the girlfriend of Peter Cook, Tara's father. Together, this Stow couple abused the victim to the point of being one breath away from death. Tara was admitted to Marymount hospital on June 17, 1983 weighing only 40 pounds at 12 years. She had been tortured and deprived of nourishment to the point where she was unconscious, totally unresponsive to verbal or painful stimuli, and hypothermic with labored breathing and no eye reflex. Her eyes were open and the cornea dry. There were burns and open sores over 15 percent of her body from cigars and cigarettes.
"Details during the trial revealed that Cook had been restrained with handcuffs to a chair or naked in the bathtub, forced into a locked closet or handcuffed to the handrail in the basement. In addition to being abused, she was deprived of her basic needs of food and clothing."

I would like to beat that smile off her face! May she die a long painful death.

She probably is. She has MS and if she's in hospital at the prison, that's probably not a good sign. My neighbor has MS, younger than me and was fine up until about 2 years ago. She is in pain and she's just hoping for a remission at this stage so it doesn't get any worse. But MS is different with everyone as is txment. (She's a nurse and still tries to work, when she can.)

WTG Buckeye state! They finally got something right. (I'm from there.)

Nah, let her go. She has MS and she is getting free medical care while behind bars.
If she were let go... "something" might happen and I guarantee no one will have saw a thing.

Believe me knowing what i do about medical care in prison for illnesses like this i say let her stay where she is and die a SLOW lingering death cause you can bet her care is not that great.

I am so in agreement that this woman should Never see the outside again Howeve there is one tiny part of this story that so totally IRKS me
Why in hell is the Sperm Donor of this Girl who was also involved in her abuse Already OUT??
He was released in 2003 after serving 20 years. He was sentenced to 14 to 45 years. Why is it no one was there Making sure he did not get out??
Why is the Egg donor left to Rot while the Sperm donor is allowed to get out??

holy shit! 40lbs at 12? my 5 year old weighs 60lbs (she's tall). I think both of these fuckers should have died behind bars! and I agree about the care she's receiving in prison. I hope she's suffering every single day of her pathetic life, just like Tara did.

    She is in pain
Stella I am so sorry your neighbor is suffering with pain and I hope maybe one day it will let up a bit. But I have no pity for Rose if she has pain from her MS as a matter of fact I hope she is in excruciating pain. I know that sounds bad but her boyfriend's daughter I'm sure went through a lot of pain so I want her to.

I think from the picture she is eating too well in jail. For her to have done this to a young child.. to me she needs to suffer more herself. Why do we keep these loosers around. They are sick themselves and then on top of it all we have to pay their medical care.

There are some of us out there who have no medical care with conditions who can't get adequate care no matter what.

These abusers need to not abuse our taxpayers resources. I say its time to start taking out the trash on a more routine basis.
