A tow truck driver and a woman were arrested Monday after the woman allegedly left her 2-year-old inside a vehicle on the South Side that was towed with the child inside while the woman picked up food.
Felicia Nwankwo, 36, of the 9300 block of South Clyde Avenue, and Naji Al Zaareir, of the 4800 block of West Engle Road, Alsip, were both charged with misdemeanor endangering the health and welfare of a child, according to a police report.
On Monday afternoon, Nwankwo allegedly left her 2-year-old son in the back seat of her vehicle parked in a parking lot where towing signs that state "parking only for Bubbleland" laundromat customers -- are posted while she picked up food from a restaurant across the street in the 9100 block of South Commercial Avenue, the report said.
The report said the woman’s vehicle was towed with the child inside to a towing yard on the 3600 block of South Iron Street, and she was arrested on the 9100 block of South Commercial Avenue Monday at 3:30 p.m.
Al Zaareir was arrested at 3:25 p.m. on the 3600 block of South Iron after he contacted police when he found the child sleeping in a safety seat in the vehicle after he had towed it, according to the report.
The report said he allegedly failed to inspect the vehicle prior to towing it.
The child was taken into the care of Deering District police officers and transported to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center for evaluation.
