Obese 7-year old
I guess this is an older story. I had not seen it before and it just broke my heart. I think the parents of this girl should face charges, just as the parents of starved child would.

My daughter was diagnosed last year with type 2 diabetes, that's generally adult on set. Her weight was and issue and is and was not even close to the size of Jessica. Her diet was an issue. Her health is so important, I had to take the step to cut out all the crap food and spend more money on healthy foods and to get her onto a exercise program. I was told by the doctor that is is becoming more and more common as our children are becoming heavier and heavier.
Jessica has health problems and who is taking responsibility for her diet and exercise? If she does not get this under control right now, she has no future, she won't live to see a future.
I agree the parents should face abuse charges.
Jeezus. How horrible and just how in the hell does a child get that huge so quickly? I mean, it takes some adults a lifetime to reach 400 lbs.
That is very sad and hard to watch.
I am glad that she is at a reasonable weight now. But for G-d's sake her parents' basically destroyed her body - she clearly has loose skin everywhere following the weight loss. Even if she "doesn't have a self esteem issue" now she will almost definitely when she gets older.
And I would imagine the strain on her heart and other organs would have done permanent damage.
The mother says she would "scream at her" to feed her more. I have a word the mother might have tried - it is two small letters - "no".
Why the hell can't people simply PARENT? Y'know, say "no" when it's appropriate, guide their children, teach them right from wrong...love them but set limits.

Often times with these children it's a case of 'misery loves company'. The mother is huge and inflicts this upon her children. In cases of severely obese children we see all to often that it's a single mom with one child. Almost as if they want a partner in crime.
And of course there are cases where the child has prader-willi syndrome where they just can't seen to get enough to eat. Or other medical reasons. Obviously from the pic of the mom it's the misery loves company issue. IMO
I feel this is a form of abuse.
This happened a few years ago, but does anyone remember the teenager who died from obesity and the mother was charged with child abuse? I can picture the girl she had black hair. Can't find it on the internet but only searched 3 pages. Anyway, the child was on a strict diet because of complications from her weight and the mom just kept feeding her. When they found her she had take out food (thinking KFC) and the mother said she couldn't stop her daughter from buying it. Bullshit. The child could barely get around on her own.
Anyway, I found this article while searching. This is about a 3yr old who died from complications due to obesity. They can choke on their own fat. So sad.

Doctors took this girl away from her loving parents and STARVED HER!! What the fuck?! Isn't this a free country? The girl wanted to eat and her parents fed her. Where is the crime in that?
You guys are comparing this to parents starving their children, but those kids weren't BEGGING to be starved. As a mother, I think it is my job to watch over the health of my children and that means proper diet. It is also my job to show my children self control and help them to learn their own self control.
I wonder if she will "grow" into any of that excess skin since she is so young.
She seems so miserable so much of the time. I hope she won't be unhappy for most of her life.

I was wondering the same thing. Also wondering why the mom isn't setting an example, say by following the same diet or something similar? "Let's do this together" might help with this child's unhappiness.
I wonder what her mom is eating in front of her as the little girl is eating her approved food? Maybe they could do SOME exercising together, even taking a walk (and walking in the grocery doesn't count).
I was a chubby child, not fat/obese, but enough to be made fun of. My mom didn't care. I learned on my own.

I do raise my kids MY OWN WAY. But when the doctors are telling me that if my daughter doesn't get diet and excises and get her weight under control she will die or have serious effects the rest of her life, then I need to take action to help her. My job as a parent is to at least get them thru the first parts of their lives, not killing them by the time they are 12. A Twinkie, fine give her one, not the entire box while sitting watching a 1/2 hour TV program. The girl could not walk, the cause? Her weight. As a parent I do want my children to be happy, but that also means sometimes making choices that will not make them happy.
By the way, my kids have been driving vehicles on the farm since they could reach the peddles. And I have a 15 year old that races go karts.
No the perfect parent, but I try and do the best I can to help guide them to make good choices.
I read all the comments. I had gastric bypass surgery in 2000 and went from 300 pounds to 128 pounds as of today's date. The surgery worked for me along with a change of mental attitude and my relationship with food. A mental attitude has to take place on the part of Jessica and her mother. The mother enabled this behavior and probably encouraged it by not saying NO NO and heck no.
More parents today need to practice portion control for themselves, as well as for their children. Obesity is a deadly disease.
I know of a case of an adult who is bedbound due to weight issues... and her significant other is the one feeding her anything and everything she wants. It makes him happy to make her happy... another scenerio. She is now in a skilled nursing facility trying to get the proper care without the enablement of her significant other.
I just hate what this girl and other morbidly obese individuals are going through. It's tough giving up food and saying no... but the quality of life issue is so important.
I believe that the parents are at fault here since she was a tiny baby. I have seen her on Mory's show many times and to me it was a media seeking thing on the part of the mother perhaps rather than let's help my daughter and oh by the way I need to lose alot of weight too.

For me this isn't about how she looks. It's unhealthy for her and I doubt she would make it to 30 if she kept on that way. I don't think the parents should be charged with anything though. What people feed their children and how much they feed them is their business. I believe in balance, but that's me.
