A 34-year-old Steelton man was charged with hitting his father several times on the head with a hatchet during an argument Friday at 16th and Market streets, police said.

The victim, Barry Gray, 60, also of Steelton, was in surgery Friday night at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Police Chief Charles G. Kellar said. His son, Kasean Gray, was arrested after detectives talked to witnesses, Kellar said.

Kasean Gray was charged with criminal attempted homicide, aggravated assault and possession of an instrument of crime. He was to be arraigned late Friday at Night Court, Kellar said.

The argument started about 5 p.m. in the parking lot of Market Street Baptist Church at 15th and Market streets, police said. After Kasean Gray hit his father, he jumped into a car and fled, Kellar said.

Police taped off the scene and took the license plate numbers from at least three cars. One officer was seen placing a hatchet in the back of a police cruiser.
