Midland Police arrested a 23-year-old Midland High School teacher Friday on a charge of improper educator/student relationship, news releases from Midland ISD and Midland Police Department said.
She was released late Friday on a $25,000 bond.
Kenzi Friday, 23, is accused of having sexual relations with a 17-year-old male student. The incidents took place between the start of the school year through the beginning of April at a north Midland residence, a Midland Police Department news release said.
Friday had been with MISD since February 2008 and submitted her resignation to the district Friday morning, Communications Director Woodrow Bailey said.
Midland Police Lt. Tony Dickie said MPD was contacted by MISD Police Chief David Colburn on April 23. An MISD news release said preliminary information provided sufficient cause for additional investigation and the teacher’s subsequent arrest.
Friday, a 2004 Midland High graduate, taught world geography and was a varsity cheerleading coach, according to the district Web site. She holds a bachelor’s degree from University of the Permian Basin in history and is married.
The charge of improper relationship between educator and student is a second-degree felony. Penalty is not less than two years and not more than 20 years and up to a $10,000 fine, Dickie said.
“These are very serious allegations and the entire situation is upsetting to us all. We fully support the investigation and await more information from local law enforcement,” Superintendent Sylvester Perez said in the district news release.
