A second person has been arrested in a neglect case involving a child left alone overnight in an Evansville apartment.
Dewone M. Broomfield was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail this morning.
Police say Broomfield and Heather Smith got into a fight Tuesday night and then left separately from their Evansville apartment, 1741 E. Michigan St., Apt E. Smith's 9-month-old child was reportedly left alone in the apartment all night.
Broomfield is believed to be the child's father. He is facing preliminary charges of battery in the presence of a child and neglect.
EARLIER:
The mother of a 9-month-old girl was arrested early Wednesday for allegedly leaving the child alone overnight in her Evansville apartment with the front door open.
Heather Smith, 19, of 1741 E. Michigan St., Apt. E, faces a felony charge of neglect. The child was placed in the care of Child Protective Services.
Evansville police were told by a neighbor that he saw a man and woman fight at the apartment late Tuesday.
The woman and another child left the scene, and the man left separately, police were told.
A baby was visible inside the apartment crawling on the floor, neighbors said. The neighbors said they went to bed, confident another person was present inside.
But at 7 a.m. Wednesday, the door was still open and the child was lying on the carpet face down, a neighbor told police.
"The child was wearing a T-shirt and diaper that was completely saturated," Officer Karen Kajmowicz wrote in an affidavit. "(The neighbor) brought the child back to her apartment and called the police."
Officers found no other occupant in the apartment.
"The child's skin was so cold that I would feel it through my uniform pants," Kajmowicz wrote. "Her diaper was completely filled with urine and leaking. Her shirt was covered with spit-up, and the entire front was soiled. The child was very congested and wheezed when she would breathe. ... She appeared to be very hungry."
Smith also has a 3-year-old.
A caseworker supplied police with Smith's telephone number, and she returned to speak to officers.
Smith said she left after the late-night altercation with her child's father.
"She said she put her 9-month-old child in her carrier and attempted to leave," according to Kajmowicz's affidavit. "She said (the father) grabbed the carrier and threw it down. She said she then left the apartment, and he followed her down the flight of stairs, striking her. ... She said (the father) then went back upstairs and locked her out."
Smith tried to get back in but could not because she did not have a key, she said.
Smith was in the Vanderburgh County Jail on Wednesday night without bond.
