The infant was a girl. Officials are unsure if the baby was alive when it was left at the hospital.

"Denver police said the infant, which appeared to be white or Hispanic, was found in a basket in front of an emergency call box at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center.
The box, with the word "Help" on it, was near the corner of 19th Avenue and Franklin Streets in Denver.
“The security guard came out, took the female baby back inside the hospital, and a short time later the baby was pronounced dead,” said Denver Police Detective Sharon Hahn.
Hahn said the button was pushed by someone at the box, but no voice was heard.
The baby was found at 7:40 p.m."

I found the following statistics pretty disturbing.

The baby found dead outside Presbyterian St. Luke's Hospital in Denver on Tuesday night adds another notch to a disturbing count compiled since Colorado passed a baby safe haven law in 2000.
Since then, at least 15 babies have been left safely at fire stations or hospitals within 72 hours of birth, giving the baby a chance for a good life and the scared mother a way out without worry of prosecution.
But almost the same number of other babies have been abandoned and found dead, say officials with the Colorado Safe Haven for Newborns organization. It's not a good ratio, say officials, who continue to work to educate the public about the law.
