Hmmm...seems to me the system has failed to protect these young boys as much as anyone else. If people knew there was a problem with this girl, why did they not do a better job monitering her or keeping her some place where she could not get at children? When someone is diagnosed at age 8 and the parents are told she CANNOT be around other children AT AGE 8 then how did anyone think things were going to magically get better when her hormones were really racing?

Not too sure the system failed here. The government can't really do much if the girl had yet to break the law. The government can not and should not monitor people because they might do something in the future unless they have already done it in the past. It is unrealistic. Now this girl's family failed her and the other children involved. The fact that she was removed from her father's home at the age of 8 because she couldn't be around other children and then ultimately placed in a foster home with other children by CPS is a bit crazy, to say the least. Now, I know what I'm about to say is going to sound crazy and I hope I don't get groaned, but I can't help but feel bad for her. IF everything they are reporting about her being mentally retarded, etc is correct that is. Maybe it's because I work with "children" like this. The kids at my school go from the age of 3 to 21 (which is the legal age that they are able to obtain an education to) and then there is also an adult program. I can honestly say from working with the "children" that were anywhere from 15-21 (in the older student's building) that I was groped several times. And, there were students, one in particular that I'm thinking about, who would masterbate and be inappropriate during school. They don't realize what they are doing is wrong or harmful. It just feels good to them because it is a natural thing with hormones, etc. They could have the body of a 21 year old, but the cognitive level of a 3 yo. I feel awful for the victims here, please do not think I don't! And, I'm not trying to make excuses for her. But, if it is true about her mental age, prison is not right for her. And, I'm usually quick to post about how I hope the scumbags get theirs in prison. But, she is going to get killed in prison and in this particular case, if the info is accurate, I do not believe that should happen. It will be like putting a child in prison.

I agree that prison time would be inappropriate for this girl, but she should do some local jail time. She knew what she was doing was wrong as she had been in trouble for the same crime in the past. Let's say she does have the mental capacity of an 8 year old, even 8 year olds know the difference between right and wrong and they know consequences will follow wrong behavior.But, if it is true about her mental age, prison is not right for her. Now I do not want to lay blame with the victims, but I seriously think these boys between the ages of 11-14 knew that this girl was "slow" or "different" (I think kids have a special radar for picking up on kids that are different) and they were happy to go with it. I am not saying they were not victimized because obviously if an adult has sexual contact with a child the child will always be the victim. I don't know what I am trying to say. I think the situation needs further examination

8-year-olds know the basic difference between right and wrong, but they don't have much grasp of consequences, at least not when it comes to big concepts like "prison" and "20-to-life". If this woman truly has the mental capacity of an 8 year old, then she no more belongs in adult prison or jail than an 8 year old would. For people like her, jail is neither a deterrent nor a rehabilitator; she'd likely come out far more messed up than when she went in.
Not only that, but she could have the cognitive level of an 8 yo but an emotional level of a 5 yo. I don't know (obviously) since I haven't seen the actual paperwork so I could just be talking out my ass, lol. But, that does make me question the boys. I didn't even think of that. They are higher functioning than her, which the article states, so now I do wonder their exact involvement. In no way am I trying to say they are not victims, but now I want to know more about this story. I don't know, something is just not adding up to me. Especially with the 14 yo. Okay, put aside her physically age because, honestly, if she really is mentally retarded, her physical age means jack to me. Let's go with the report that she is at the level of an 8 yo, so you must picture her as an 8 yo because physical age would be null and void in this case. Nowhere do I remember reading that she held anyone down physically or used a weapon. A 14 yo would def know she was mentally retarded, especially if as extreme as reports are claiming. That is kind of the point I was getting at. Did these boys take advantage of a mentally disabled young woman? Was it consensual contact on all sides? Did the young woman force herself on these boys? Just a sad story. She needs supervision, obviously, but I have no idea any kind of specific details on what would be appropriate for her. Very sad for everyone involved.
Based on her myspace she certainly knows how to spell words like "fuck" and "evil" but not more common everyday words. Sheesh.
