RUTLAND, Vt. -- A fight over a man's estranged wife led to a fatal stabbing outside the Diamond Run Mall on Monday afternoon, state police said.
Investigators said Kerry Munger, 52, of Benson, asked Trevor Herrick, 34, of Clarendon, to meet him regarding a dispute over Munger's wife. The two men met at about 2:40 p.m. in the Sears parking lot at the mall located off Route 7 in Rutland.
At some point, the argument escalated and Herrick stabbed Munger in the back more than once using a fixed-blade hunting-style knife, police said.
Munger, who was not armed, collapsed and Herrick called 911, at which point, a bystander performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Munger. Paramedics transported Munger to the Rutland Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Herrick spoke with state police detectives, who charged him with second-degree murder.
He told police Munger, upset that his wife was leaving him, shoved him twice before Herrick pulled the knife and threatened to kill him before Herrick stabbed him a second time.
Herrick told police at the scene he stabbed Munger and that he expects he'll spend the rest of his life in jail for it.
On Tuesday, Herrick pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Vermont District Court in Rutland. Judge Thomas Zonay ordered him held without bail.
