Children's charities have condemned Cambridge University after a shamed professor caught with more than 1,100 images of child pornography returned to work today.


Dr Nicholas Hammond, 45, was convicted of possessing the images - including 30 in the most serious 'level five' category and some featuring babies just two days old.

But he was spared jail at his sentencing and today went back to work as a reader - a position under professor - with a yearly salary of at least £55,259 according to the university's latest pay scale.

Hammond, a specialist in modern French theatre who was director of studies in modern languages, was arrested in June 2007 after police raided his home following a tip-off and suspended on full pay by the university.

He pleaded guilty to a total of 15 charges - 12 of making indecent images, one of possession and two of distributing images - at Cambridge Crown Court last July.

The court heard how Hammond, who is gay, had not intended to look at pictures of babies, only those of teenage boys.

Judge Gareth Hawkesworth described him as a 'sorely damaged individual' who needed help and support to be rehabilitated.

The judge added: 'You are highly motivated to heal yourself and as a highly intelligent man you have the capacity to do so.' Awww.. isn't that inspiring?

Hammond was given a suspended 12-month sentence and a two-year supervision order, as well as being placed on the Sex Offenders' Register and being fined £1,000.

This one judge in particular seems to be some kind of ultra-asshat. I'll say it again, someone needs to start thoroughly checking this guy out (the judge). He seems almost criminally sympathetic to kiddie porn enthusiasts, and other offenders as well.

Judge Gareth Hawkesworth made his pledge after the 16-year-old was cleared of attempted murder.

The judge told Cambridge crown court: "This is not a case in my judgment where the only issue is punishment."

A woman who stabbed her boyfriend after he posted photographs of himself on the web posing with other women has been spared a prison sentence.

Handing down sentence Judge Hawkesworth said: "I would see no sensible purpose or any sensible outcome should I send her to prison." He gave Miller a nine month suspended sentence, a supervision requirement for 18 months and ordered her to have a programme of therapy or counselling.
