CALUMET CITY | A Calumet City man is charged with aggravated battery to a child after police say he beat a 3-year-old so badly the boy had fractured ribs and other injuries.
Twenty-six-year-old Nelson Miranda was charged early Friday, Calumet City Police Comander Dan Zorzi said. Luwanna Slack, the mother of the child and Miranda's girlfriend , was also charged with endangering the health or life of a child, Zorzi said.
The abuse took place at the couple's home in the 500 block of Douglas Avenue, police said.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services notified police on March 13 after the child was brought to St. Margaret Mercy Healthcare Centers in Hammond on March 10 and later transferred to the University of Chicago Children's Comer Hospital in Chicago.
"He had fractured ribs," Zorzi said. "He had liver and pancreatic contusions. He was suffering from dehydration and hypothermia."
Two other children were removed from the home by DCFS, Zorzi said, and the 3-year-old is in foster care.
Nelson is scheduled to appear in bond court on Saturday morning, and Slack bonded out on Friday morning, Zorzi said.
