A Palm Beach County Schools substitute teacher cut her child's face with a knife during an argument, authorities said.

Maureen K. Pacheco, 44, , of suburban Lantana, is charged with child abuse.

Judge Nancy Perez ordered her held in lieu of $3,000 bail plus supervised release and order her not to have contact with her daughter.

According to a Palm Beach County Sheriff's report, the 14-year-old said that, about 11 a.m. Friday, her mother answered a call for her.

Before handing her the telephone, the girl said, her mother grabbed her hair and slapped her on the right cheek.

The girl said her mother returned five minutes later with a knife and lunged at her face, pricking the skin, then punched her face, leaving a bruise.

Then, on Sunday morning, the girl told deputies, her mother struck her again and pushed her into a wall.

Pacheco later denied knowledge of the assaults and said her daughter had slept over a friend's Thursday night and returned with the bruises.

Pacheco has no previous criminal record, prosecutors said this morning in court.
