A Fargo man was sentenced to a
five-year prison term on Monday for child neglect after hitting his 6-month old son in the head with a laundry hamper.
Dantonie Blount
pleaded guilty in July to the felony charge of child neglect. He said in Cass County District Court he deeply regrets the April incident. He told police he struck his child after he got upset because the boy kept crying.
“I’ve messed up everything,” Blount said Monday in court. “I just wish I could take everything back.”
Judge Steven Marquart split the difference between a three-year term sought by the defense and the seven years wanted by the state.
Blount’s attorney, Steve Mottinger, said his client is a veteran and
his actions might be connected to the psychological effects of serving in Iraq.
or they might be connected to the fact he is a plain old assclown.
Mottinger also argued for the shorter sentence by saying Blount was likely to be treated poorly in prison.
“This is the kind of crime that puts him on the lower end of the totem pole,” he said.
Mark Boening, assistant state’s attorney, said that Blount deserved the longer term because the infant was helpless.
Mottinger said
Blount’s family wanted him to ask for just probation, a prospect the attorney admitted was unrealistic.
The boy also had broken ribs in various stages of healing and bite marks on his arm. Mottinger said the child has apparently made a full recovery.
