Woman Arrested for Dragging Dog Behind Car
It happened Thursday, April 9, 2009 around 3:00 p.m. in the 4000 block of Reed Street. Alejandra Ortiz is charged with aggravated animal cruelty after neighbors say they saw her pick up her kids from school and take off down the street with the dog chained to her bumper.
"The dog was barking and then I saw all the blood on the street," says neighbor Shana Worthum. "She stopped in front of our driveway and we told her she was dragging a dog behind her and she didn’t seem to care.”
The neighbors say Ortiz picked up the dog, threw it in the trunk and slammed it closed before taking off to her house. Neighbors called police and officers say when they got to Ortiz’s home, the dog was chained to a carport.
The dog is still alive. Police say it is being treated at a local vet's office. Officers say when they got to Ms. Ortiz's home, they also found several other dogs in the backyard. Officers also took those dogs away because of what they called unsanitary conditions.
Memphis Police say
animal cruelty officers told them this isn't the first time they have been called to this home about animal complaints.
Alejandra Ortiz is in jail on a $5,000 bond. She will be arraigned on Monday, April 13, 2009.
