Hopefully while he is free on bond he is not babysitting. He looks a bit scared in his mug. I hope he is. Once he is convicted perhaps he is afraid of what Bubba will do to him?

An official with the federal Bureau of Land Management, who heads the field office in Kanab, has been charged with multiple felonies for allegedly forcing a young girl into numerous sex acts.

Rex Lee Smart, 60, has been accused of engaging in the sex acts with a girl he was trusted to care for. According to court papers, the first incidents allegedly happened between May and June of 2005 when the girl was just 9-years-old.

Smart is accused of taking the girl to his home in Kanab where police say he fondled her, exposed himself to her and forced her to engage in oral sex and sexual intercourse.

Another incident happened more than a year later, in Sept. 2006 at the Kaneplex rodeo facility. Authorities say Smart took the girl for a ride in his truck and even "taught" her how to drive. He then allegedly drove to an isolated spot, laid her on the seat and forced oral sex with her.

Smart was charged with numerous crimes including sodomy on a child, attempted rape of a child, aggravated sexual assault and kidnapping.

Authorities say some of the charges are "aggravated" because Smart was acting as the girl's babysitter at the time, placing him in a position of trust.

Smart was booked into the Kane County Jail and later released on $125,000 bail.

An arraignment for the former head of Kanab's Bureau of Land Management field office who faces multiple felony sex abuse charges involving a child was delayed until April 16.

Rex Lee Smart appeared Wednesday before 6th District Judge Wallace A. Lee in Kanab.

Smart's attorney, Gregory Saunders, asked for the postponement to review documents in the case.

Lee, who is unavailable April 16, scheduled the arraignment to be held in Panguitch before District Judge Marvin D. Bagley.

At the arraignment, Smart will enter a plea to the felony charges.

Lee will continue to be the judge in the case during future hearings.

Smart, 61, resigned as manager of the BLM's Kanab field office shortly after the charges were filed in January 2008.

The alleged crimes took place between June 2005 and September 2006 at Smart's house and at the rodeo grounds in Kanab and allegedly involve the same girl when she was 9 and 10.

Smart remains free on $125,000 bond.

If he's truly "Smart" he'll off himself. Lots of ways to go on the outside, not so much once on the inside.

Smart gets smart...

Rex Lee Smart, an ex-manager of the Kanab field office for the Bureau of Land Management awaiting trial for alleged sex crimes against children, shot himself to death when police arrived to arrest him Thursday.

Kanab Police Chief Tom Cram said Friday that officers with Kanab police and Kane County Major Crimes Task Force went to Smart's house about 8 p.m. Thursday in Kanab to serve an arrest and search warrant related to allegations of witness tampering.

When told police were there to arrest him, Smart , 62, went into an adjacent room saying he was getting his shoes. Once in the room, Smart shot himself once in the head with a handgun, Cram said. Smart was taken to Kane County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to court documents, the latest charges against Smart -- both third-degree felonies -- involved threatening e-mails he allegedly sent to his former wife, who lives in New Mexico. The e-mail stated she was going to "falsely accuse me of abusing children." It also threatened to file a defamation suit.

The woman told Kane County investigators about the e-mail on March 29 and said she was concerned Smart might become violent toward her or another family member.

The latest charges, filed Tuesday, come on the heels of new sex abuse charges that had been filed against Smart on May 17. Then, Smart was charged with a single count of aggravated sex abuse of a child, a first-degree felony, and two counts of sex abuse of a child, both second-degree felonies.
