Minutes after failing to show up Monday for her daily update with reporters covering the disappearance of her daughter, Tara McDonald was being talked about online.
"Shame, shame" said one posting in the largest Facebook group for missing eight-year-old Victoria (Tori) Stafford of Woodstock, Ont. "She could have been more sympathetic to Rodney (Stafford, the estranged father) and tell him even an hour before that he would be doing the press conference alone."
Another posting, in a Facebook group calling for Tori's mother to take another lie detector test, said McDonald's absence from the briefing was "ridiculous."
"Today she could have addressed Tori & told her how much she missed having her home for Mother's Day," said the posting.
A few minutes later another person wrote, "I would not be able to do it either if I was her. Let's cut her some slack at least for 1 day!"
The 1 p.m. press briefing, held almost every weekday by McDonald on the lawn of her home since her daughter's disappearance on April 8, has become something of a cross between high drama and reality TV. It is streamed live online and televised on occasion.
While the daily event has kept the story of the child in the public eye, it has also become fodder for online commentators who scrutinize McDonald's every word and action.
McDonald started the briefings shortly after her daughter's disappearance and more recently her ex-husband has also started coming.
On Monday, Stafford found himself alone at the microphone after McDonald was a no show.
McDonald texted Stafford several minutes into the conference to say she would not be there.
Rumours and speculation that McDonald is somehow involved in her daughter's disappearance began quietly in Woodstock but have since grown loud enough that McDonald said last week she has plans to meet with a lawyer to take a look at the "slander."
In the largest Facebook group, there are more than 120,000 members and more than 88,000 messages have been posted.
Many of the postings offer support or are about organizing awareness events for the Grade 3 student, now missing more than one month.
Tori has not been seen since she went missing while walking home after school. Video surveillance cameras caught her on school property with a woman in her 20s with a ponytail and wearing a white jacket.

McDonald held up a small heart-shaped piece of paper on which Tori had written "Love your Enimese," days before being taken.

"I am trying very hard to do what you learned at Sunday school shortly before you were taken from me," McDonald said, reading from her letter.

"You taught (us) that we need to love our enemies. So I have given up on trying to figure out why this awful person or persons have done this to our family."

Instead, McDonald promised, she would take the "negativity, the anger, the pain" to fuel her determination to get Tori back.

"I am going to love my enemies and while I am praying for you and your safe return I am going to pray for whoever it is who has my princess will find the compassion within their own hearts to do the right thing."

McDonald said she decided to share the letter with the media so Tori's captors understand how deeply they have hurt the family.

"Just let her go."

Tori went missing April 8 after dismissal from Oliver Stephens public school. She was seen on a video surveillance tape with a woman walking north away from the school on Fyfe Avenue.

McDonald has been criticized on Facebook pages created since the abduction for not showing emotion at those conferences.

Yesterday, her voice was thick with sobs as she read the letter.

"One of the many things that keeps me strong and keeps me fighting is the thought of holding you in my arms and smelling your hair, stroking your little ears and hearing your sweet little voice saying 'I love you momma and I missed you,' " she read.

"Victoria, I need you home so badly and I will stop at nothing until you are here and that's a promise. You are a very (big) part of me and you have to know that I cannot live without you."

okay this is my theory..operative word being theory.

here are some facts from the case:

Victoria was taken from the school, with evidence suggesting it was someone she knew.Victoria's mom's boyfriend is known to have a criminal record and has been speculated that he has an involvment in drugs. When the police sketch was released the public went wild with accusations that the sketch resembled mom's best friend.

these ae the facts that caufgt my attention and i think they all may be related to come to one conclusionn. a conclusion that i hope with all of my being is the actuality as shitty as it is..it still seems thebest solution to me.

LOL no you didnt babble!Its hard not to keep on going with this case.I think from day 1 people have rightfully assumed that mom and penis are involved.Especially wth her non emotional daily updates and his criminal record that is ongoing.People get criminal records that you hope they outgrow,he hasnt.I say that b/c my husband regrets everyday his criminal record he got as a teen with stupid B&Es,drinking whatever.Cost thousands to clear his name when he reached age and saw that getting a decent job with a record even as a minor was next to impossible.Moms penis is still getting into legal trouble with drugs and theft and hes in early 40s.I also believe Tori is still alive and its tied somehow into mom and penis and owing money.The Bff thingy is still new to me and with that sketch being so dead on I feel either someones out to hang this on moms BFF or theres a whole story behind them that we will never know.Either way I dont feel Toris dads involved in any way shape or form.I think hes being strung along just like the rest of us.I really think police are closing in on something but they cant tell us.My friends hubby is a cop and hes not one there but even "chatter" among other cops here and around him feel shes alive and will be found safe. WOODSTOCK — The mother of a missing eight-year-old girl admitted yesterday she’s fighting an addiction to Oxycontin, facing straight-on the rumours drug use has something to do with her daughter’s abduction.

“If I was still a drug user, then maybe people could throw stones. But I have made the step into going and getting help, so people should look at that as a yeah for me and not a nay for me,” Tara McDonald told The Free Press.

“Instead of putting me down for it, they should be saying at least she has recognized that she’s had a problem and she’s doing something about it.”

McDonald said she was introduced to the drug about four years ago. It eased the pain of struggling as a single mother without a high school diploma, trying to feed and clothe and raise two children mostly on her own.

“It makes everything so happy when you’re not happy, when you are worried and depressed and upset. It masks the problems,” she said.

About two years ago she started going to a methadone clinic in Woodstock, McDonald said.

Doctors prescribed her the opioid methadone, often used to help people get off more harmful painkillers like Oxycontin.

Just more than a year ago she relapsed, McDonald said.

“I said I don’t need it. I can do it on my own. The last year I went back and probably in the last seven eight months I’ve been doing better than ever.”

The rumours of a drug addiction have shadowed McDonald ever since her daughter, Victoria ‘Tori’ Stafford vanished after school April 8.

There’s been talk the abduction is somehow linked to a drug debt or drug deal gone bad, which McDonald denies.

Yesterday, she dealt directly with the talk about addiction.

“There is so much speculation about it and I’m tired of people talking about it like I’m still kind of drug addict.”

Police have investigated her addiction and her effort to battle it, McDonald said.

“I am not going to get into the depths of it, but it has been looked into. The recovery has been looked into and everybody can say I have been doing extremely well.”

If there was ever a time when she’d relapse, it would be after the abduction of her only daughter, McDonald said.

“You would think that this would cause a hard-core relapse, and I have been doing so well.”

McDonald allowed herself a rare laugh in a wide-ranging interview about her struggles.

Before she was addicted, she weighed 300 lbs, she said.

On Oxy, also known as hillbilly heroin, she dropped to 150 lbs.

“If my weight at all (now) doesn’t tell you that I’m doing better, then I don’t know what does,” she said.

At no time did her addiction ever hurt her ability as a mother, McDonald insisted.

“It doesn’t make you any less of a mother because you are struggling with an addiction. It can happen to anybody.”

She dismissed rumours she and her boyfriend ran up thousands of dollars in drug debts, which prompted dealers to kidnap her daughter.

“I have never incurred any debts that way. When I was using drugs I never incurred any debts whatsoever.”

Between one private and police donors, about $60,000 has been put up for reward money, McDonald noted. An anonymous benefactor also promised whatever it took to bring Tori home, she said.

“If it was about money, then that would have been taken care of.”

Here we go...it's all going to be about mommy now is it? If my kid is missing I'm not going to blather on about my weight loss. Nor would I discuss any addictions I might have. I'd even go so far as to say I wouldn't be worried about what a bunch of people who don't know me are saying. The truth is the truth no matter who believes it.

Minutes into the media conference, Rodney Stafford accused his ex-wife of showing a lack of emotion, while she countered he was able to cry before the cameras because he feels guilty for being an absentee father.


The spat began when Tara McDonald started to explain that she wasn't the type of person who cried in public to which Stafford, her ex-husband for seven years, responded she was showing a "total lack of support" for her daughter, now missing more than five weeks.


"This is your daughter," Stafford said. "It doesn't matter who should be standing in front of you. I could have the world standing here and I would cry. I wouldn't care, Tori is missing."


McDonald responded: "You want to talk about a lack of support for my daughter? Where the hell were you for the last nine years."


She said she is frustrated that her ex-husband has been portrayed as "super dad."

I just found this on a blog of a guy dedicated to finding Victoria This is a comment posted by "Anonymous" Just Yesterday and I think its sums up what I feel and have said about the picture/sketch all of a sudden coming out.

Lets go back to square one. AN 8 year old girl is waiting at school to be picked up to be taken home.3 people are authorized to pick her up.They pick her up every other day,why not on the day of her dissapearance.They said 2 girls were to go home with her to watch a movie after school why weren't the 2 other girls with her.Then she walks away with a mystery woman willingly without a struggle.Obviously if they watched the video close enough.when she walks by the guy standing there if you pause the video when the woman is beside him.She is almost the same height as the guy standing there.The average guy is 5'8" or taller so if the guy in that video is 5'8" that would make the woman 5'6" or 5'7". When they stated at the first that the woman was 5'1" to 5'2".As further noticed the boy walking behind them gets close to where the fence post is turns completely around for a second walking backwards for a second as if he was looking at something or someone,what was he looking at.then they get a person that does a composite drawing of the woman in question a week after the girl is already gone,that person must have photographic memory if they can remember a week later what a person looks like to have only seen them for a split second.You tell your kids never go with strangers but a mysterious limo shows up parks on anoth street then the person trespasses on other peoples properties.Then they go on a limo ride to Toronto with a complete stranger not known to them to meet another stranger in a Hotel Room for 2 hours.Must have had a lot to talk about for being in a room that long.Throughout the day before the disappearance there would have been ample video surveillance tapes around the city that this woman would have made at sometime,could have went to Tim Hortons,Grocery Store,Department Store etc. as if they were planning on taking a girl and keeping her obviously the girl would need a change of clothing or after a couple week wearing the same clothes you'd smell pretty ripe.Then mother seems to get almost daily news conferences with the press where I always believed if the press wanted answers they should be going to the people investigating the case,but notice how calm,cool,collective the mother is,if I lost a child I would be frantic not doing a grandstand show for the TV camera.Then they have these bizarre fund raisers who is profiting from this?There have been no ransom demands so obviously she wasn't taken for that purpose or something would have happened by now in that regard.Been over a month the girl is still missing,no signs or traces but a video that you cant make out cause the quality is poor that when you zoom it in its all fuzzy with pixels.But obviously there are certain people out there who know whats going on cause if a woman takes a child this woman would have aquaintances that know about it.Sooner or later they will be found as this is a bizarre case from the beginning and the person responsible is likely not to far but where is the girl. The powerful prescription pain reliever has become a hot new street drug that has resulted in more than 120 deaths nationwide. It will give you a high much like HIGH GRADE heroin but with worse consequences. 5mg of OXY has as much active ingredient (oxycodone) as One percocet. So chewing/snorting a 40mg OXY is like taking 8 percocets at once or a 80mg Oxy is like taking 16 percocets all at once.Holy shit my husband gave me a 1/4 few weeks ago b/c my jaw was infected again and I was buzzed all night!!Oxycodone is a central nervous system depressant.Im not saying shes back on Im just saying shes showing all the traits of it.But I could be wrong

You might be on to something here Whisper. I've never taken Oxy either but many people do and not necessarily for the reason prescribed. I wouldn't want to falsely accuse her either and frankly under these circumstances I almost wouldn't blame her if she was taking something. I don't know how any mother gets through a situation like this.

I could not get to sleep one time so I cut a sliver off the end of one of my son's seroquel. My God that was a major mistake. Not only did I not fall asleep but I couldn't even stand up or anything. I also shook all over. I tried to get up to take a hot bath to help me sleep but kept falling over on my way to the tub. I figured even if I did make it to the bath I'd probably just drown anyway. I ended up just lying on my bed like a big slug waiting for that piece of pill to wear off. Ugh. Never again.

long term drug abuse and dependence can cause changes in personality thru brain chemistry that may last for years or for life even after the person is sober. emotional flattening is frequently seen in people who are long term abusers of any drug.

she's not necessarily "back on" oxy, but there is definitely something going on with her as evidenced by her narcissistic verbal diarrhea. hmmm... is meth a big thing in Canada?
