Whisperwing.....Ann Rule is my absolute favorite when it comes to True Crime. I love how she explores the psychological side of the victim and the offender. She has a great way of turning her facts into a very interesting easy to read story. I always feel like I know the whole story when I read an Ann Rule book.

You better be prepared to stay up until you finish "Small Sacrifices" it's impossible to put down once you get started. I find that to be true of all her books.

Let me know how you liked it. I'm betting that you will love it.

I love her books too.I have read 12 of them in last 10 weeks.I have Small Sacrifices,The Stranger Beside me(Ted Bundy Story) waiting to be read. She does go into detail and the psychology of them.At first I used to get restless b/c the 12 I have are 1 long story and then 8-10 shorter ones(50 pages each). And it seemed to take her forever to get to the point of the longer one,but now I love the detail she gets into.I will let you know how I like it but I sure I will.Only thing that pissed me off about her was at beginning I didnt realize some stories shes already had in other books and I used to get pissed paying for new book with all the old stories I had read so now I really check them out.

This just came through my comp as a alert,,Police offer $50,000 in Tori Stafford case
The Oxford Community Police Service made the announcement on Tuesday night as officers continued to investigate the suspected abduction of the eight-year-old girl, missing since April 8 from her home in Woodstock, Ont.

Earlier on Tuesday, Victoria's mother, Tara McDonald, told a bizarre story about a mysterious limo ride to a Toronto hotel.

McDonald thought she was heading to Toronto to meet with renowned psychic Sylvia Browne about her daughter's disappearance.

Instead, the mystery guest turned out to be an anonymous person offering to pay Victoria's captors a reward for a safe return.

McDonald told reporters she didn't know what to believe when a limo driver knocked at her door and told her that his wealthy boss wanted to speak with her.

The driver had apparently walked through the woman's backyard, far away from the prying eyes of reporters who were camped out front.

"(It all sounds) crazy? I know," she said. "I thought that we were going to see Sylvia Browne."

McDonald said she has left a message for Browne, wanting to speak to her about Victoria's disappearance.

But it wasn't Browne. Rather, it was an anonymous traveller who had a stopover in Toronto wanted to help after seeing the case on TV.

This person, who McDonald has refused to describe because of her promise to keep them anonymous, has reportedly also lost a child to a kidnapping.

McDonald said the person was told by police not to pay a ransom demand for their child and as a result their child was killed.

"They didn't want that to happen to me," McDonald said. "They said it was fate and that they wanted to help."

MacDonald said she, her boyfriend and best friend travelled to see the stranger in Toronto, at the Sheraton Hotel located by Pearson International Airport. A limousine was provided for them for their travel.

McDonald said she was the only one who went upstairs to talk to the stranger and when she did, she stayed for about two hours.

McDonald said she told police about the encounter and forwarded a number to authorities that has been set up to facilitate the transaction should it be necessary.

So far, both police and McDonald say there have been no ransom demands.

Victoria's father Rodney Stafford stood next to McDonald while she spoke to reporters.

He said he only heard about the trip to Toronto from McDonald after it happened and that he wished he went along to meet the stranger.

"If someone is willing to help then that's great, Other than that, I don't know anything about it other than what Tara has told me," he said.

McDonald said she's well aware the story sounds "crazy" and that people are speculating about the encounter.

"A lot of weird things have taken place (since Victoria disappeared)," she said. "A lot of weird messages, a lot of weird letters. It's not any more weird than anything else that has happened."

Victoria, known as "Tori" by close family and friends, has been missing since April 8. She was last seen walking away from her school with a woman whom police have not been able to identify.

Im guessing cops dont believe her either.By offering $50,000.00 they may be hoping someone desperate will provide info to crack this case.Need money to buy drugs, maybe someone saw something at a crack house or something but I think cops are trying this method as a way to try and flush someone out.

So she basically got into a limo with a total stranger??? This case is getting more and more hinkey the more I read..someone knows SOMETHING!!! I mean the school vid camera and no one recognizes the alleged abductor?? WTF!?!?! How many woman have a poofy white coat? I hope they checked previous days to see if maybe she was stalking Tori. I don't know about this. I just hope it really isn't/wasn't a drug deal gone wrong. This precious girl has been missing far too long. Don't they say that after 48 hours chances of finding the child live and well dwindle? Now the reward is 50grand? Too much weird shit, possible lies, are happening with this case, I don't know which wasy to go...

Yeah I know.Whos going to have a mysterious stranger sneek up to door.Meanwhile 40-45 reporters out front and no one sees a limo or a big guy cutting into back yardWho the hells going to go in a limo with someone from Bum Fuck Arabia. Then continue that length of a ride (45-60 minutes) with a stranger. Then boyfriend stays down in car and let girlfriend go into that situation aloneThink shes watched Pretty Woman 1 to many times.Or Ive watched to many Datelines and 48 Hours and doubt the world. But somethings really wrong here. Now cops offer moneyI personally feel by cops offering money they hope someone will come forward and snitch on someone. And drug dealers, loansharks want money. But not when it would put them in spotlight, they would want to stay under the radar. But lower level guys under drug dealer have probrably seen/heard something and may wanna make a quick buck.I dont know Im just guessing

I agree Shellie theres something off.Especially to offer a reward from cops 24 hours after the "Hero Wealthy Man" offered unlimited funds!!And thats OK about Canadians I am 1/2 American, born Sault Michigan, raised Sault Canada!!So when Canadas acting like a asshole I can say Im American and when Americas acting up I can say I am Canadian!!I wracked my brain all night and ONLY case of a ransom demand around here at all was years ago and it Cecilia Chung/Zeung or something like that.Cecelias the right first name but I cant positively remember last name. And she ended up dead b/c the guy that kidnapped her was family friend and he accidently suffocated her from what I remember. And her family wouldnt have money to offer up like that.So Im kinda glad about her stupid comments b/c they show her real side and actually have tipped cops off Im sure in some way as to what really happened.

apart from all the abovementioned weirdness with the limo-riding benefactor... it is just so... so... such a fantasy for a delusional attention-seeking psychopath to want to have happen.

it really is what would be on the mind of a woman who would kill her child.

and it is huckabee-esque.

So the cops themselves put up the reward money? That's unusual in itself isn't it? I've heard of missing children organizations or crime stoppers offering reward money or even the families themselves but never the police. Or maybe I'm just not thinking too clearly today and have it wrong. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong about this please. It seems though police usually don't even like rewards offered because it tends to bring out all the weirdos.

I would dearly love to see this end, happily of course. These missing child cases can get so convoluted some times. Have you read through the Haleigh Cummings thread? Even Jerry Springer would be ashamed of that bunch. That thread is a good read though if you've not read it.

I bet the cops know more than we have heard about, which maybe the reason they put a reward out there. Maybe they are trying to reel someone in. I hope so.

Whisperwing...books are very expensive and I wouldn't be too happy if I had bought a repeat story in another book. They do that on purpose the money grubbing varmints. Nobody ever liked to go shopping with me btw...most females want to shop for clothes and shoes and crap but not me. I only ever wanted to go to the bookstores and find true crime books.

Did you ever see the movie "Small Sacrifices?" That is one good movie. Farrah Fawcett plays Diana Downs very well

Yeah thats the exact print out that came through my comp last night. And no mention of Crime Stoppers or that putting the money up thats what caught me especially 24 hours after mystery man offered.Cops here dont normally offer money.I cant remember any cops offering money here at all ever.I think cops are hoping a snitch will call up and want the reward.Because someone has to know something somewhere,,

Ahhh...well if the cops themselves did it that might mean they are onto something. Maybe they have a "person of interest." Wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall listening to these investigators discussing this case? You know they have formed opinions on who is responsible for this disappearance, even if they can't prove it.

Petrina's assessment of the mother pretty much says it all. You just know there has to be a cop or two who are thinking along those same lines

Yeash I agree with both of you.I have never in my life see any stranger come forward and offer up a ransome/reward except in the movies.I was just telling TT in WW about my best friends dads a cop(was undercover cop actually) when we were growing up.And my son was almost 15 went to a party and went missing.I called cops and they said they wouldnt look for a day b/c he was a teen and teens go away for a day and come back.So I called my best friends dad he had the troops out and found him almost 3 hours later but drs told us we had maybe 15 minutes and he wouldve been dead.If he had sat to rest or anything he wouldve been dead.So I know the frustration of dealing with cops when you need them. And if I hadnt known one I may have had to make funeral arrangements. So these cases get me b/c at first it looks like the cops arent doing squat then you get more info and get into it a bit deeper you see they know what they are doing.Although, Oxford cops havent got a clue in cases like this one. They shouldve turned this over to OPP first thing. And Im shocked OPP wasnt in on it from day 1 b/c I live by there and all the small towns now are OPP.No more small town cops all OPP.And I thought Oxford wouldve been by now too but Im sure very soon but I hope its not to late for Victoria.Im trying to talk hubby into taking a overnight trip this weekend. Its not far and I would like to see for myself whats being done, check out the town, see if they have many missing posters up etc, etc. So Im going to convince him we need to get away lol

Whisperwing....ohhhhh, that will be great if you get to take the road trip. You have to promise to give a full report of the trip. Maybe you can check out the placement of the video cameras at the school. I'll cross my fingers that you get to go. Hey be sure to check out where the mom lives if at all possible...you'll be able to tell how the magical limo was able to go undetected. I wish I could go too!!!!

That is awful about your son. I feel for you. How frustrating that would be to be told you had to wait 24 hours for any help. Thank God you knew someone who was able to help. Time was of the essence in your son's case and sadly in many other missing people cases that end badly because of the time factor.

Yeah I would love to go ,its only2.5-3 hours away maybe less.My brothers in TORONTO and its its 3.So I think Woodstocks this side of TO.Hes saying next weekend he just got back from 2 week business trip.
TY about son, just a stupid teenage thing but almost cost him his life. And I know theres reasons for everything but still sucked.Glad Dawns dad was a cop or we wouldve(maybe ) lost him .They really need to revamp the rules for missing people mainly teens, babys, elderly. They need to treat each as individual case as a new one. This waiting period is shit and Casey proved that when drs said we wouldve lost him in another 15 minutes .So how many kids are out there and missing its not 24 hours yet but maybe if they had searched a child/elderly would be found alive.I have noticed for the last month or 2 that kids are missing but they dont put out amber alert b/c they just wandered offuntil its too late.Look at Sandra Cantu.

K I have hubby talked into next weekend b/c he was in Hong Kong for 2 weeks for work and wants to relax and clean up the yard(we got a puppy last summer and just dug up everything our old dog buried over a 15 yr period). So I at least can tie him down next weekend for it.I googled"The latest On Victoria Stafford May 1 2009"And only thing slightly updated is this news paper. But I kinda found the related links interesting:Sketch looks nothing like me(Toris mom)::The price of freedom is trial by fire or Facebook::::Missing girls mom hedges about polygraph::Theres a video from April 24 most have probrably seen. But I find the 3 related links interesting especially b/c it shows people arent buying the story and chatting about her on Facebook(I am going to find that account after im done jogging) and the polygraph test heres the link in case anyone wants to see them,,http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl...deoLineup/Pick

Whisp, I saw you mention drug deal type motives maybe. What makes you think that? I haven't seen it mentioned I don't think.

I've known enough drug dealers I guess. I don't think they'd take a kid for a debt.

"It's all lies. We don't owe anyone money," Goris, who has dated McDonald for six years and has a criminal past of drug-related charges and theft, told The Free Press. "It's all hearsay. This is a nightmare for us." McDonald held an impromptu news conference at her home yesterday. (from post#17)

TY Shellie I decided to be nice and let kittens stay out and had just finished and one ran across the keyboard,,,K here goes.1)McDonald also defended her boyfriend, James Goris, and urged Woodstock residents to focus on her daughter.Mom started getting very curt and defensive when boyfriends arrests began coming out.Nobody knew mom existed first 10 daysI thought dad was single dad b/c it was only him in the media.2) The message here is,
'find my kid, don't worry about what my boyfriend is doing
.'Her comments got my hinky meter going ,not the media.3)
Goris was in court this week on charges of possessing stolen property, an incident McDonald suggests was the result of bad luck.
Hope I never have a week like that.4)
The couple has taken lie-detector tests, though police won't discuss the results. Rodney Stafford also took a test, the questions of which focused "on my daughter," he said.
When a person takes a polygraph and pass they are on every media outlet possible screaming from the roof tops. How many times have we seen a person results not released until they are arrested or something and turns out they have failed or are in conclusive5)
As police fell silent Thursday and refused for the first time to provide information on potential developments in the case of a missing child that's gripped this tight-knit southwestern Ontario city, family members expressed anxiety the night before the police chief was to update the community
As soon as his criminal records began coming out the police all of a sudden began turning this over to OPP.His records are for drugs and theft.6)
Ontario Provincial Police Det.-Insp. Bill Renton, who is now spearheading the case, said investigators have "analyzed the evidence and we've come to the conclusion that it's an abduction.
".OPP took over and Im only guessing here, around the same time Victorias dads family began going to police with info to her moms activities and the sketch of the woman they said they recognized as someone they knew"but not well"7)8)
A “significant team” of detectives has also been added to the officers already working the case, police say. They will resume canvassing homes and revisit areas previously searched by the original, Oxford police-led ground search.
9) Detectives here arent called in UNLESS they have info that maybe she was taken as part of a drug deal/theft gone wrong and they feel they have a chance of finding her safe.Only other times detectives were used here in child abduction cases were the Allison Parrot and Christine Jessop cases in T.O and only reason they were used was b/c the American FBI(John Douglas) was there at the time and had TO police asking him questions and offered to profile basically as a favor on the last night there and he was dead on with his profiles and hes the reason those cases were solved.9)"
To me, it is just a word," he said. "Missing and abducted -- it's the same thing to me
.I dont feel her dads in on this but to me that statement was retarded ,missing means not coming straight home from school,or not telling someone your going to leave 1 friends house and go to another.Abduction is forcibly taken against your will and violence involved.10)
appearing well-composed McDonald said something inside her tells her her daughter is still alive.
"I'm her mother, I know her better than anyone else on the planet," she said, adding she thinks Tori was taken by someone she didn't know.
"I'd like to think it was a stranger because I would not like to think that any friend or acquaintance or anybody that I know would do something like this," she said.
So a stranger is safer then someone she knows"
She's always been told about strangers and she knows about strangers. She wouldn't be walking with somebody she doesn't know."
For someone to be as bold as she was to walk up to the school when all the parents are picking kids up and teachers and monitors are walking around Victoria had to have known her and been comfortable with her.If she was a stranger Victoria wouldnt be holding hands and walking away happy chatting.11)Talk about trying to sway people by cashing in on the "pretty white blonde child abduction""
I think it was just a crazy person who took my baby," she said. "She is an exceptionally beautiful child and that's why she was targeted."
12)
McDonald's family has set up two bank accounts for donations, one to help pay for counselling and a trust fund for the children, and the other for living expenses. Tori's brother, Daryn Stafford, needs counselling, McDonald said.
I have never heard of a family asking for handouts while searching for a kid.Normallyafter a body is found accounts are set up at a bank for donations to help with burial.13)The girl's father, a weary-looking Rodney Stafford, gathered with his siblings, brother-in-law and his mother Wednesday afternoon, as they have often done these torturous two weeks, and discussed the question on everyone's lips : who is that woman?
We do have suspicions," Tori's uncle, Steve Millen, said
We have our own beliefs and we have brought those to the authorities," Tori's aunt Rebecca Stafford added, choosing her words carefully. We've shared those beliefs and they are being investigated."
I am thinking these suspicians are shared around same time OPP took over.Exs family would know her activities BUTan ex and exs family have to take it with a grain of salt they could just hate her.14)This sealed it for me on the drug issue b/c shes smoking something if she thinks this is even remotely believable.
a limousine driver walked through her yard and knocked on her back door. When she answered he said he had a wealthy boss who wanted to meet her. So Tara, her boyfriend, brother, and best friend, got into the limo. felt calm with him. I didn't feel nervous," she explained.
the limo took them to the Sheraton hotel near Pearson airport. She then says she went alone to a suite on a top floor and met a person who insisted they must remain anonymous
.
apparently money --- any sum Victoria's kidnapper's want. In the meantime, police are looking into the offer.
So is this where Victoria learned to go with strangers
The group drove to Toronto Thursday evening, but waited until yesterday to reveal the latest development in the case that has captured the attention of national media. McDonald says she wanted to speak with police first.
Victoria's father Rodney Stafford also attended the Tuesday afternoon press conference and said he thinks it's great such an offer has been made, but did add he would have liked to have been a part of the meeting.
And Im sorry when you add it all up this to me is a ploy to get the attention of the guys they owed money to.Theres no other reason to make up stories like that. They havent heard from them in awhile and want them to know they have scraped the money together to pay them. But also Victoria has an older brother, where was he when she walked off with this woman I know not all drug dealers would hurt kids but some will.My brother isnt allowed in my home and around my kids at all ever.I was 8&10 when dealers busted into our home looking for him for money. They didnt touch me but I cant tell you how scary that is for a kid to be sleeping and all of a sudden the door is literally booted out of the frame and men come in looking for money they are owed.Ripped my moms house apart. So I know not all will but this is 2009 now not the same as when I was a kid.And that little boy Cole was abducted by drug cartel b/c mom, stepdad, and grand dad stole money and drugs from them and they held him I think almost 2 weeks before dumping him in a strange area he didnt know. But at least they didnt hurt him and his dad has custody of him now b/c of the crap that went on.So its just my opinion with everything added together I think drugs are the big reason here. Also the same day Victorias mom said that a stranger offered her money the police THEMSELVES pt up 50,000.00.Police here dont offer up money for rewards.Crime Stoppers is the big reward guy here and few smaller ones.So personally by them offering that I think its a way to see if a snitch will comwe forward and say if they saw or heard anything anywhere.Theres a reason for them doing that like I said they dont offer up money.

Only a handful of people showed up Saturday morning for ground search organized for missing Victoria (Tori) Stafford.

The search was galvanized through Facebook by Carlton psychology and law student Laura Boisvert. Boisvert said she was “baffled” as to why the ground search had stopped for the missing girl.

“In Ottawa that is not how we deal with missing children. We search every weekend,” she said. “It was distressing to me that no searches were being done.”

The group plans to search several areas in Woodstock this week.

On Sunday the group will search from noon to 7 p.m.

Participants can meet up at the playground in Southside Park Sunday at noon.

Tori went missing on April 8 at approximately 3:30 p.m

Tori is four-foot-five inches (134 centimetres) tall and weighs 62 pounds (28 kilograms).

She has blue eyes and blonde hair cut just below her ears.

She was wearing a green shirt, a denim skirt, black and white shoes, and a black Hannah Montana jacket with a white fur-lined hood.

She may have been carrying a purple and pink Bratz shoulder bag.

Hopefully there isn't such suspicion on the family that people aren't willing to search.

As horrible as this is.. I thank God its Springtime. Imagine Tori getting snatched in the winter? All searches would have to be called off due to inclement Canadain weather. People would say "Aw, its too cold today..we'll look tomorrow (yeah, I've heard that one before) Sorry..it was just a thought I had while re-reading the posts.
Have happy thoughts everyone!!!

WOODSTOCK -- The police officer who's the face and voice of a 22-day hunt for Victoria (Tori) Stafford said yesterday she firmly believes the missing eight-year-old girl is still alive.

Const. Laurie-Anne Maitland of Oxford Community police said some, but not all other officers, agree.

"In our line of work we have to be prepared for any possible outcome, but I believe she is alive and I know there are people who share that belief," Maitland said.

Maitland also said police have investigated the story of a mysterious offer to pay a ransom for the return of Tori and concluded "it does not cause us concern."

But Maitland chose her words carefully and refused to go as far as Tori's mother, Tara McDonald did in describing the police probe.

Earlier yesterday, McDonald said police confirmed to her the story was "legitimate."

"I know those were Tara's words," Maitland said. "Our words are that it does not cause us concern."

The officer also addressed suggestions the offer was part of a police sting operation, using the mysterious and wealthy stranger to elicit information from McDonald and her family.

"Are you asking me if the people in the limo were police? Certainly not to my knowledge," Maitland said.

Just came through my comp as a news alert New images of car released in Tori Stafford case http://news.sympatico.msn.ctv.ca/abc...ori_Car_090504

,,,Police released new images of a dark-coloured vehicle Monday which was spotted close to where Victoria Stafford went missing last month -- among the first new bits of evidence in the case released in weeks.

Police in Woodstock, Ont., released an image of a vehicle that was seen in the area where Victoria Stafford disappeared. They believe the driver may be a valuable witness.

The make and the model of the station wagon haven't been identified yet, but police hope the images will spur additional witnesses to come forward.

"The driver of the vehicle is believed to potentially be a valuable witness to this incident and the Police would like to speak with this person," police said in a release on Monday afternoon.

According to surveillance images, the vehicle was seen driving on the same street where Victoria and her alleged captor were also spotted.

Release of the images had been delayed as police attempted to improve their grainy quality.

The eight-year-old girl was last seen walking away from her elementary school on April 8 with an unidentified woman.

Investigators describe the woman as being 19 to 25 years old, at least 5'1" tall and weighing about 125 pounds. She is believed to wear her long dark hair in a ponytail.

Officers in Victoria's hometown of Woodstock continue to canvas door-to-door in search of clues about the girl's whereabouts.

Meanwhile, the Ontario Provincial Police scoured a landfill site east of the town of Salford.

Officers are also asking local farmers tending their fields to be "extra vigilante" to look for anything unusual or suspicious
