Barrie Fellow Arrested Re:1986 "Babes In The Wood" Murders

An old story that may finally see some justice served after 23 years.
Barrie Fellow is the father of one of the victims, Nicola, who, along with her friend Karen Hadaway, was found strangled to death in Wild Park, Brighton, in 1986 at the age of 9.

    Story Here

The father of one of the “Babes in the Wood” murder victims has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting the child before her death.
Barrie Fellow 59, was arrested at his home in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, today on conspiracy to rape his daughter, Nicola, who was murdered in 1986 aged 9.

The schoolgirl and her friend Karen Hadaway, 10, were found strangled to death in Wild Park, Brighton.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said that a 59-year-old man had been arrested in Cheshire along with a 44-year-old man in Brighton on suspicion of rape.

The men, who have been bailed without charge to reapper in June, were arrested after a witness came forward with information, The Times has learnt.

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said that the investigation into allegations of sexual abuse was unrelated to the ongoing murder inquiry.
The investigation is being led by Detective Chief Inspector Adam Hibbert, of Sussex Police’s Major Crime Branch.

No one has ever been brought to justice for the killings of the two girls, which came to be known as the Babes in the Woods murders.
Russell Bishop, a labourer, who knew both girls and their families and had helped in the search, was arrested two months after they were found together on October 10, 1986.

He was charged with the murders but was acquitted after the prosecution admitted a series of errors in the presentation of forensic evidence at his trial in 1987.

He was jailed for life in 1991 for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl from Brighton but has always denied killing Karen and Nicola.

It remains to be seen. Barrie is currently pretty pissed about the allegations, apparently, and is planning to take legal action against the Sussex Police in retaliation for the arrest.

    Story Here.

The father of "Babes in the Wood" murder victim Nicola Fellows has condemned police who arrested him on suspicion of sexual abuse.

Barrie Fellows was arrested at his home in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, at the same time as a 44-year-old man was arrested in Sussex.

The arrests relate to allegations of sex abuse during the 1980s and are not linked to the unresolved inquiry into the murder of Nicola and her friend Karen Hadaway.

But Barrie Fellows emerged from his home to venomously deny the sex abuse accusations, saying they have "no credence whatsoever."

Issuing a statement after being released on police bail, the 59-year-old said: "A false allegation was made in 1987 by an ex-girlfriend of Russell Bishop.

"This was investigated by Sussex Police and the Press Association and was found to have no credence whatsoever.

"At the time it caused massive distress to myself, Sue and my extended family.

"I am absolutely devastated that the police have chosen to re-visit this false claim and arrest myself and another man.

"I will be seeking legal advice regarding false imprisonment and wrongful arrest.

"I will also be seeking civil action against the ex-girlfriend of Russell Bishop.

"In 1987 the News of the World confirmed the allegations were false.

"Not a day goes by when Nicola is not on my mind and in my family's thoughts.

"My family are pressing on to stop Russel Bishop's parole in August and we strongly believe this allegation is related to that.

"This is the only statement I will make until I have sought full legal advice about these false allegations."
