A Gloversville man was sent to prison for killing another man today but not before telling the victim's family, "I'm sorry you guys don't have your father around anymore, but life sucks sometimes."
That's what 27-year-old Randy Green told Raymond Pike's family as Green was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the Aug. 15 killing, Fulton County District Attorney Louise K. Sira said.
Standing before Judge Polly Hoye, Green repeated his claim that he killed Pike — who served time for a sodomy conviction in the 1990s — after watching child pornography at Pike's apartment.
But prosecutors say police never found such a DVD with child porn when they searched Pike's belongings.
Green stabbed Pike, 63, repeatedly in the torso after the two men argued, Sira said. Pike's body was found on the "Rail Trail," a popular walking and bicycling path in Gloversville.
Pike's daughter ripped Green in court today accusing him of "playing executioner" to a man who was loved by his family.
"My father will never know the joy of grandchildren, build a relationship with them, never share in the love and admiration of just being 'Poppy,' " Melissa Richardson wrote in a statement she read in court.
"My youngest son, Carson, will never have the pleasure of meeting the man I call Dad, and you, Mr. Green are responsible for this. We are left with only precious memories that we will treasure forever and pass on to our children who will never have the privilege of knowing a truly great man."
Richardson said Green compounded the family's pain with the child pornography allegation.
"What was to follow this devastating news was like nothing our family could have imagined. Hunted and persecuted by the media was how we were to spend the next few days, numb and trying to grieve," she said, "our family name smeared and ruined as we planned the funeral of a life loved, yet lost too soon."
