So I'm watching this video, and nothing much is new until I get towards the end. And I have a "holy shit" moment. You see, as an Athiest, someone who is anti-gun, and pro-choice, who thinks creationism needs to get the fuck out of our schools... I have a hard time explaining why economic policies trump all and I end up voting for more Republicans than Democrats every November. I spend the entire year making fun of them... and then when it comes time to vote, I end up pulling the lever for more 'R's' than 'D's'. This video resonated with something in me that explained it all:
Like the speaker, I wouldn't care if the people running our country believed in an invasion of lizard-people from a hollow earth who were interested in our virgin cattle. If their method of governing was to implement systems which protect me and my stuff from the paws of others... I would support them and forgive their lunacy.
Democrats are generally more correct on the social issues that matter to me. And fewer of them have ignorant-sounding Southern accents and more of them attend church. But they seem keen on making sure that the stuff I own stays mine. The Democrats think that they know what everyone needs, and that this knowledge makes them the logical people to control it all and distribute it.
One side is a bunch of know-nothing fucks that just happen to get the most important thing right. The other side is staffed by experts with reasoned arguments and bold theories that get everyone fucked.
