2 dogs kill San Antonio infant, injure grandmother

SAN ANTONIO — A 7-month-old boy has died after being attacked by two pit bull dogs belonging to his grandmother in San Antonio.

Police Chief Bill McManus says the grandmother was getting ready to feed the boy Tuesday morning and went to her kitchen for his bottle. When she returned her dogs were attacking the baby.

The woman got a knife and stabbed one of the dogs, and got the child away.

The chief says the dogs then attacked the grandmother before she managed to get them outside.

Police killed the dogs in her backyard.

Authorities said the child was dead at University Hospital. Police said the grandmother was being treated at the hospital.

Police did not identify the family or say if charges would be filed.

I feel for the grandmother because she reacted as soon as she saw that the dogs were attacking the baby. However, she should not have left the dogs for one sec. alone with the baby apparently within reach of the dogs. I know all she did was go to the kitchen to get the bottle but all it takes is one sec. She did react get a knife and tried to stabbed them more than I can say for some mothers. So she did try to fend them off and even got hurt in the process. May this baby RIP and I'm so sorry the baby's life ended so tragically and soon. My prayers are also with the grandmother to heal quickly and I hope they don't press charges against her.

Poor little guy. I feel so sorry for the grandmother. She's gonna have to live with this. How do you tell your kids that your dogs just killed their baby? How? I couldn't handle it.

Well, that makes way more sense then eradicating an entire breed of animal.

We were discussing this in chat - so you may have read some of this but I'm going to type it here anyway.

First of all - who exactly are you waiting for action from? The dog Hitler?

Secondly, let's say the dog Hitler never hears you. So you take matters into your own hands and buy yourself a portable gas chamber on wheels and go and kill each and every pit bull dog*. You fixed it right?!

Oh but no - the press needs those stories. So they pick a new breed to stir hysteria about. I named this breed the Snopperdoddle. I don't want to give another breed a bad name for using it as an example. So now we hear every single day about Snopperdoodle attacks. Usually it's Snopperdoodles owned by irresponsible owners and such - but hey who cares - it sells papers!

Will you just keep rollin' in the gas chamber until you've eradicated all dogs? Will you then move onto snakes? Do you think there may be a more logical and humane answer to the problem?

*Be careful! you kow a "pit bull" isn't actually a breed right?

Honestly, I don't usually sit and watch the chat box. That would be boring.

And it just my opinion. That's all. We'll have another pit bull attack tomorrow, and the next, and the next. I've been counting them for weeks now.

And the next day, and the next, and so on and so on..............

(But I do think it's funny that as soon as I post on a pit attack, everyone comes running to jump at the same time, LOL)

    I was waiting for you...............

I'm not bias to breed. What I am bias to is the owners. Who has dogs and when they briefly walk away, they maul and kill an infant.????????? Did the owner never see vicious propensities in her dogs? Did she notice any annoyance when around children? Because something is familiar in all these cases; when unsupervised, the dogs attacked. It's one thing if you touched an animal in the wrong way and got bitten or perhaps a child taunted an animal and it attacked, but there are increasing numbers of cases where the dogs attacked and mauled without prevocation.

I would think she had to know something about their nature and demeanor. This isn't just a random kill....!!!!! Animals are animals and before anyone puts their children around an animal, they need to thoroughly know that animal's likes/dislikes and annoyances and pay attention to their animal's reactions to stimuli.

I am saddened that this happened at all! The grandmother has to live with this and that seems torture enough, but a child died viciously being bitten alive and I just think this could of and should of been prevented with more care and attention.

Peep....... I love you, but I cannot agree with you on this one.

It is not the breed. Animals will always have that instinct in them to attack. Not just dogs either. But we hear about the pits because they have been attacked by the media so much and because some stupid asshole decided that he and his friends wanted to use these dogs for fighting.

I trust my neighbors min pins about as much as I trust a tiger.

My Ben was bitten by my grandmother's stupid pug, it took 4 of us to get the dog off Ben. Thank God, he didn't go after his face or head, but still a pug turned. Why this dog turned no one knows, but it did and until he was finally 2 years later put down, we did not go to my grandmothers house.

Pit bulls were responsible for 60%, or 21 dog attack fatalities in 2007. The other attacks were attributed to Rottweilers, German Shepherds, bulldogs and Chows. Considering just how many pit bulls (and dogs in general) are owned in the U.S., the incidence of attack-related fatalities is actually quite low. There are roughly 60 million dogs in America, and it is estimated that pit bulls account for 2-6% of them. 0.00000875% of pitbulls are responsible for fatal attacks.

You're FAR more likely to be killed by a black person than by a pit. Should we kill off black folk because, statistically, they're more prone to violence than other races? Of course not.

This is not an issue with the breed, it's an issue with the owner. There need to be sharp penalties for those whose dog kills or injures out of their owner's negligence.

First of all you can't terminate a breed of dog and we all know it. Second, that is it I've been the one posting some of them and maybe for a little bit of my bad side showing here shit stirring, me bad. So I for one am going to quit posting about pit bulls because they are getting a bad rap. Again, it helps the media to sell their papers and yes they are a very aggressive type breed of dog. But if trained and handled properly by their owners they can be just like any other pet dog, if not well then you have a dog that can and will attack.

Dude, you don't have to stop. They're gonna keep reporting only pits. And people are going to continue posting them. It's just asinine to believe that entire breed of dogs should be wiped out due to media hype. You're not stirring the pot.

Athena LOl on the comparison of blacks vs pit bulls. I know it works that way. I was bit by a black person and all I was doing was squeezing his plugged anal glands. I don't blame the black guy. I blame the pit bull who had him on the leash and the way the dog raised him. so lets eradicate pit bulls

seriously you probably have a better chance of being struck by lightning than getting mauled by a pit bull.

Peeper let me tell you a story of what happened to Ian when he was about 3 yrs. old. I lived in Atlanta at the time and he was on the porch with my dog which was half lab half doberman (loberman) and I ran into the kitchen because Whitney was in the high chair crying wanting something. So I left Ian on the porch for a minute not thinking anything would happen because my dog porker was his name was good as gold. But Ian I think went to get on his back or something and the dog bit him. He got him in the mouth and of course I panicked and call Art at work, 911 and see the mouth bleeds a lot and blood was everywhere. Of course the police came, the animal control but everyone was very cool about it and they checked Ian over and said it wasn't that bad of a bite and decided not to do anything to porker. I still went ahead and took Ian to the Dr. but he was fine.

My point to this story is any dog can attack if provoked, not use to a certain situation, etc. It's not just pit bulls that are attacking people it's just the media choosing that breed to publish a story. That's what I think and I bet there are other dogs out there that have attacked people, children and babies that we just aren't hearing about.

I know. And honestly, I probably wouldn't even have posted a thing, if I hadn't been bored out of my mind and hopped up on pain meds. I just wanted to see all who would jump me again.

Eh, that's what I get for being bed bound this week. But again, it's just my opinion and doesn't count for much.

This is one of the most pathetic things I have heard anyone say on here. You were bored and cranky and drugged - so you thought you go and try and see how much attention you could grab up by manipulating people?

Did it ever occur to you that those of us defending these animals care very deeply for them and fight very hard to stop the abuse and ignorance that causes them to be killed without merit? I wasn't playing "pick on peeper" like you'd like to believe - I was passionately talking about something I care very deeply about and hoping I could educate people a bit. I'm glad you think it's funny - and entertaining.

It's funny how many times you call yourself "probably the nicest person on the boards" and yet you can do disregard people's feeling for fun. Amazing.

Good God Pixie, I did not actually comment to manipulate anyone. I was bored so I posted.

And yes, I understand that you all love your dogs passionately, I said in one of the other threads that I knew how awful it is that I feel this way. But it's my feelings. Just mine. I'm not trying to change your mind.

I am not trying to get attention, I made a very small post about my opinion and you and SU were hot on my heels. I understand your feelings and i'm not trying to change them, just like I won't change mine. And the puppy pics, yeah cute, but they grow into very dangerous dogs.

I'm not gonna argue the point. I will agree to dis-agree. From now on when I see these posts, i'll just post the word "Sigh" and ya'll can have at me again.

Uh, Peep, you said it yourself. You purposely posted to "see who would jump me again." You are certainly entitled to your opinion. But you are NO BETTER than the trolls you are so "hot on the heels" of that it just makes you look kinda...well...pathetic.

    Sorry, that's just my opinion.
