CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A UNCC professor nearly beaten to death -- now a major break in this shocking case of violence. One teenager is under arrest, but detectives are looking for two more.
It was a shocking crime.
"In this incident the deadly weapon is actually considered hands and feet because it was just a brutal assault," said CMPD officer Jean Wassenaar. A UNC Charlotte math professor was heading home from the uptown bars last October. "This was very much an innocent victim walking down the street," she said.
Naryan Dhakal was robbed and beaten so badly doctors initially told his brother he might not make it.
We caught up with them this past January and saw Dhakal's amazing -- but still slow -- recovery.
His brother Abi told us, "He can communicate, but the verbal part is not very clear." Now, six months after the assault, police believe they have one of his attackers in custody: 18 year old Maurice Weaver -- street name Spade.
"He's been very cooperative with us," Wassenaar told Newschannel 36.
Weaver is charged with robbery and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. And here's what is so alarming: police believe the first blow was likely enough to knock Dhakal out, but the three attackers kept at it.
"That's the disturbing part."
The professor is doing a little bit better each day, walking and talking, but we're told he is nothing like his old self.
