Prison crew baby-sits boy found on highway

A prison work crew baby-sat a 2 1/2-year-old boy who was spotted Friday running along the center lines of a rural Maryland highway, with trucks loaded with gravel rumbling by, police and correctional officials said.

The six minimum-security inmates shared their lunches with the toddler, who apparently wandered away from home, and played with him while authorities located the parents and investigated, said Gary Kershner, a correctional officer who was overseeing the prisoners.

"Me and my inmate crew, we just kind of baby-sat for the next three hours," Kershner said. "They were as much entertained by the child as he was by them."

The boy was on state Route 550 about two miles south of Woodsboro, not far from the Pennsylvania line, when a dump-truck driver stopped to pluck him off the road shortly after 9 a.m., said Trooper 1st Class David Greenwood, who was at the scene.

Kershner, who had stopped his van to help, said the truck driver handed the boy to him for safekeeping until police arrived. A State Highway Administration truck driver accompanying the litter-picking crew also stayed on the scene, agency spokesman Charles Gischlar said.

Troopers eventually found the boy's home nearby, Greenwood said. He said the child was reunited with his family after Child Protective Services investigated and found no immediate cause to suspect abuse or neglect.

The boy's father, who works at home, told police he had left the child in the care of an 18-year-old daughter, who then left without notice, Greenwood said. State police were conducting their own investigation and would report their findings to Frederick County prosecutors for possible charges, Lt. Michael Brady said.

Kershner, 52, of Smithsburg, said the hilly road is treacherous due to traffic from dump trucks going to and from a nearby quarry.

"You're taking your life in your hands to be an adult walking along that road," he said.

I'm guessing the 18 year old is now looking for a place to live?

Because if I had an 18 year old daughter who did something that STUPID she would be.....

This little one is very lucky he didn't get run over and that there were people kind enough to take care of him around.

Many people think of every single person in prison as an evil monster who will kill at the drop of a hat. This story shows them differently. Many inmates have children of their own on the outside. On a side note, I agree with Cheney, my daughter would be getting a swift kick in the butt. Pray she doesn't have kids.

Three hours?? Yeah, I agree with MJC, she would be finding someplace else to live. Even if it were three seconds.

And good for the inmates for taking care of him.

If you're allowed to pick up trash on the side of the road, you're not a hardcore prisoner. I'd imagine they don't let murderers pick up burger king wrappers along highways. In any case, it's a cute story with a happy ending. Although I wonder if there really was an 18 year old who skipped out on babysitting.

What an unexpected encounter for both baby and inmates. I think its wonderful that people you don't associate with being nurturing, did just that, with one who really needed it at the time...funny how things work out sometimes.

    Be safe little one.

The article says they had CPS investigate and found no reason to suspect any abuse. If he lied about having a daughter I think they would have taken him in.

If she's 18 and was supposed to be babysitting, I'm wondering why she wasn't charged with neglect.

That's impressive, but remember they do not let the hard core inmates out to work out on the roads. But still impressive.

    Good point!

Prisoners Babysit Toddler Found on Highway

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - A prison work crew baby-sat a 2 1/2-year-old boy who was spotted Friday running along the center lines of a rural Maryland highway, with trucks loaded with gravel rumbling by, police and correctional officials said.

How sad is it when the prisoners are the most responsible adults in this situation !

Was the father gone or working at home? If he was home, why did no one report this child missing?
