NEW PORT RICHEY -- A 24-year-old woman was charged with child abuse Tuesday afternoon after authorities said she hit a 5-year-old girl with a shoe. The child had a shoeprint-sized bruise on her thigh and knee, according to a Pasco County Sheriff's Office report.

Maria Del Carmen Martinez-Marquez (pictured) told authorities she hit the child with a sandal while the girl was at the kitchen table doing homework. The child, who is not identified because of the nature of the allegations, had raised her voice to Martinez-Marquez, according to the sheriff's report.

"Defendant stated that she has had calls of abuse on her in the past, but this time she stated, 'I'm guilty of it,' " the report said.

Martinez-Marquez, who lives in New Port Richey, is being held at the Land O'Lakes jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.
