Police say two cats starved to death in teacher's Boca Raton apartment

BOCA RATON - Two cats starved to death in a teacher's apartment because, between work and her social life, she didn't have time for them, police said.

The cats were found dead Feb. 23 at a Boca Sol apartment and were taken to the county Animal Care & Control for necropsies.

The findings: They were left in the home of Congress Middle School special education teacher Allison Dinsmore without enough food and water for up to a month. They died a painful death caused by dehydration and starvation, officials said.

Police accused Dinsmore, 26, of cruelty to animals, a misdemeanor, though she has not been charged. Police could not arrest her, officer Sandra Boonenberg said, because "misdemeanors must occur in the officer's presence or be a 'misdemeanor exception,' which animal cruelty/neglect is not." The State Attorney's Office will decide whether to charge Dinsmore.

More than a month ago, a neighbor became suspicious and notified the Boca Sol property manager, who called Dinsmore. She said she had been feeding the cats at night, said Tina Alma, assistant manager of Boca Sol apartments in the 200 block of Northeast 20th Street.

By mid-February, Dinsmore had not paid her rent. After a phone call to her was not returned, the manager went into her apartment Feb. 23 and found the dead cats. She called police.

According to the police report, the cats left signs of their struggle. "The apartment was completely upside down," Alma said. "They brought the ceiling down. These cats went crazy looking for food."

"She's an excellent teacher," said county School District spokesman Nat Harrington.

Dinsmore told police she had been working a lot and staying at a boyfriend's home in Greenacres. She could not recall the last time she returned to her apartment.

OMG and she is a Special Need Teacher of all people I would have thought she would have known better and been more kind and gentle to these cats. Fuck you just never know about a person these days. Then I read about how these cats when wild looking for food and that just tore at my heart and just about killed me. How in the hell could she treat them this way. This scares me that if she can treat cats this way is there a possibility she may show a little bit of a cruel streak to her kids. You just never know.

BOCA RATON - Prosecutors upgraded charges against a Palm Beach County middle school teacher they say let two cats waste away and die in her apartment.

Boca Raton police accused Allison Dinsmore of misdemeanor cruelty to animals March 12. Police said the cats were left without enough food and water for up to a month in her Boca Sol apartment. An officer who investigated the cat deaths had to put a rag over his mouth when entering her apartment because there were feces and urine all over the home.

Today, prosecutors charged Dinsmore with two counts of felony cruelty to animals, saying that her actions inflicted "unnecessary pain or suffering" on the animals.

Dinsmore, 26, is a special education teacher at Congress Middle School. She told police in mid-March that she had been working a lot and staying at her boyfriend's home in Greenacres. She couldn't tell police the last time she had been home.

Neighbors said that the cats looked thinner than normal earlier this year. The animals' corpses were discovered Feb. 23 when an apartment manager went to see why Dinsmore wasn't paying her rent.

So not only was she failing to feed the cats, she fucking lied about it too!! The property manager questioned her about the cats care, and she said she was feeding them at night!

There is absolutely no excuse for this, she was 'reminded' of her cats existence and made a conscious decision to leave them starve. The very least she could have done is go and let them out, so that they at least had a chance to find food and water for themselves! Fucking bitch!

I hope she loses her job over this, I would not want someone capable of such cruelty teaching my vulnerable child.

BOCA RATON - The Congress Middle School teacher accused of letting her two cats starve to death "was the victim of an abusive situation" and her Boca Raton apartment had become "a zone of danger that was real and significant," her attorney said Wednesday in the first statement released on her behalf.

"The State Attorney's Office has accused Ms. Allison Dinsmore of malicious acts that were committed with the intent to cause harm and suffering. This conclusion was not shared by the police agency initially assigned to investigate this matter," Dinsmore's attorney Jordan Lewin wrote in a statement.

"Allison was the victim of an abusive situation in which her former apartment presented a zone of danger that was real and significant," Lewin wrote. "This abuse created a level of distress and anxiety that affected her normal routines and forced her to make abrupt lifestyle changes. Every reasonable effort was made to ensure all of her responsibilities were being taken care of in a way that would keep all of those involved with this situation safe. All of her choices and decisions were made under duress. The miscommunication and errors that led to the unfortunate demise of her pets was a terrible tragedy. These errors were not intentional or purposeful."

Dinsmore, 26, was released from the Palm Beach County jail hours after her arrest. She was booked about 3 p.m. Tuesday and released about 1:30 a.m. today after posting a $4,500 bond on animal cruelty charges, records show.

Dinsmore, who now lives in Miami, is accused of letting her two domestic cats die in her Boca Raton apartment while she said she was busy working and spending time with her boyfriend and family.

A blast of angry e-mails and phone calls to Palm Beach County school officials this week demanded: Don't allow teacher Allison Dinsmore on campus when classes resume Monday after Spring Break.

But school district officials said Thursday that Dinsmore, free on felony animal cruelty charges, is still assigned to her job at Congress Middle School in Boynton Beach. She's accused of letting her two cats starve to death in a Boca Raton apartment.

Dinsmore, 26, will report to work as long as she hasn't been suspended, her attorney, Jordan Lewin, said Thursday.

District spokeswoman Vickie Middlebrooks said school police are investigating the allegations against Dinsmore, who was hired in August 2007.

BOYNTON BEACH - Palm Beach County school officials today yanked teacher Allison Dinsmore away from Congress Middle School in Boynton Beach, pending an investigation into animal cruelty charges.

Dinsmore, 26, has been reassigned home with pay, School District spokesman Nat Harrington said.

"The school has not been disrupted," he said. "Her classes are being taught by qualified teachers."

The case has sparked public appeals to School Board members and School District administrators demanding Dinsmore's removal from campus.

Today is the first day schools have been in session since the new charges were filed.

The district has a practice of reassigning teachers under investigation for various crimes - whether they happen on campus or not - to jobs that have no contact with students. In some cases, teachers are permitted to remain in the classroom during investigations.

Dinsmore was hired in August 2007. She receives a $36,100 annual salary.

BOCA RATON - Allison Dinsmore, a special education teacher facing felony animal cruelty charges in the starving deaths of her two cats, told Boca Raton police she just "lost track of time."

The State Attorney's Office released a report Monday detailing her case, including her written statement and a veterinarian's conclusion that the cats died more than a month before they were discovered.

"I lost track of time and was informed by my parents about the condition of the apartment and the death of the cats," Dinsmore wrote in a witness statement form Feb. 27.

She said that she last visited her apartment in early February and left food, water and a clean litter box for her pets and intended to return within a few days.

But her cats were discovered dead Feb. 23 by the apartment complex manager of Boca Sol, in the 200 block of Northeast 20th Street. The alarmed manager, who was looking for rent money, called police.

Dinsmore, 26, has been charged with two counts of felony cruelty to animals. She was reassigned from her teaching post at Congress Middle School in Boynton Beach to a role where she has no contact with students pending a personnel investigation by the Palm Beach County School District.

Police found empty feeding dishes on the floor and a kitchen that appeared ransacked with a cat lying on the bottom shelf of an open cabinet. The other animal was discovered in the living room partly beneath an entertainment center.

A memo from the veterinarian who examined the cats' remains revealed that one of the black and brown tiger-patterned felines was found collapsed on top of a plate infested with maggots and flies. It was decomposed. The second cat had similarly decayed.

The veterinarian determined the cats' cause of death was starvation and dehydration. Dinsmore told police she thought about her pets while she stayed with her boyfriend in Greenacres, but she did not get a chance to go home to care for them.

"I spent the next few weeks working long hours and staying at my boyfriend's house which is closer to my work," she wrote.

Her attorney Jordan Lewin was not available to comment. He has said that Dinsmore was a victim of abuse herself and that her former apartment presented a zone of danger.

If convicted, Dinsmore faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison on each count.

Trial Of Former Special Education Teacher Who Let Cats Starve To Begin On Monday

Boca Raton, FL (AHN) - A former Congress Middle School teacher who is facing prison time for allegedly allowing her two cats to starve to death has been fired. The criminal trial for the former special-education teacher is scheduled to begin on Monday however her attorney is using legal wrangling to stall.

Six weeks after Allison Dinsmore's March 12 arrest, Congress Middle principal Kathy Harris notified Dinsmore, the 27-year-old, that she would not recommend renewing Dinsmore's contract for the 2010 school year. According to published reports the memo went on to say that Dinsmore was the subject of an investigation into allegations of unprofessional conduct and ethical misconduct.

Dinsmore who was sent home with pay after her arrest is charged with two counts of felony animal cruelty, each carrying a maximum five years in prison.

Then on Sept. 25, Dinsmore was notified by School Board officials that the allegations against her had been substantiated and her employment had been terminated. Reportedly in late February the property manager of her Boca Sol complex entered her residence because she was weeks late with the rent. Immediately he was overwhelmed by the stench of ammonia, feces, and rotting flesh according to a police report. Investigators at the scene found a dead cat under an entertainment center and another dead cat inside a kitchen cabinet. A veterinarian determined the animals died of dehydration and starvation at least a month before being discovered. In a report to police said Dinsmore told investigators she had been working long hours and spending time with her boyfriend. She also told investigators that she had left her pets for a week at a time before and she simply filled their bowls with food and water and they had been fine.

Despite the trial scheduled to begin on Monday her attorney has filed a motion to continue the case until January or February. Reportedly her attorney is attempting to hire a veterinary science expert and is trying to throw out the search of Dinsmore's apartment, saying it was done illegally since police had neither a search warrant or Dinsmore's consent to enter the residence.
