A 16-year-old girl whose misidentified body languished in a morgue for a month, while her family searched for her, died from an asthma attack she suffered as she was restrained and raped, officials said Friday.

Tiana Rice was reported missing Dec. 30, when she didn't return to her Bronx home after going to Brooklyn to meet someone she had gotten to know online, police said.

Police responded that night to a call of an unconscious woman at an abandoned Brooklyn home, and EMS pronounced the girl dead. It was Tiana, but she was mistakenly identified via the driver's license of a previous resident of the home, who is still alive.

The 911 call came from a pay phone not far from where Tiana's body was found, clad only in socks, police said. It was unclear whether she had meant to go to the abandoned home.

An anthropologist later realized Tiana's body didn't match the age of the person on the driver's license. The body was identified a month later, after the anthropologist pored over missing-person records.

Meanwhile, Tiana's parents and other family members frantically searched for her.

Her father identified her body Feb. 3. Authorities initially believed she died from an asthma attack, police said.

On Friday, the news for the family got worse: The medical examiner's office ruled Tiana's death a homicide and said she died of cardiopulmonary arrest and acute bronchial asthma brought on by being restrained and sexually assaulted.

No arrests have been made.

Investigators said they believed that Tiana connected with a man on the Internet in the days before her death, a law enforcement official said. Their theory is that she agreed to meet him at the Ridgewood Avenue building, where they engaged in consensual sex, the official said.

At one point, Tiana had voluntary sex with a second man at that location, the official said. At another point, a third man who was in the abandoned building wanted to have sex with her, but she refused, the official said.

The official said investigators believe that the first man held Tiana down while the third man raped her.

The medical examiner reached its conclusion on Friday, the police said. “She ends up having an asthma attack at that time or after having been held down and raped by the third guy after two consensual acts,” the official said. “Due to that link of being held down and assaulted, the medical examiner ruled it a homicide.”

I read some more about this and If no ones been arrested how the hell do they know she had sex with 2 guys willingly and not the 3rd one??? That doesn't make any sense to me. I can see a 16 year old going to meet a guy and having sex with them but not 2 guys. It just doesn't add up. Why paint her up to be a slutty little whore??? How do they the 2nd guy didn't threaten her life ??

The original autopsy pretty much said she died of natural causes??? Now she died of the same thing except it was brought on by rape?? WTF!!

And it's not like the family hasn't been through enough already.

My guess is that they found semen from three different sources on her or someone else who was in the building witnessed what happened and is talking -- but regardless, who is to say whether or not the second go-round was consensual or rape.

Maybe it's a "blame the victim" defense for not figuring out who she was a month earlier when she was reported missing. That shifts the focus away from their failure to identify her -- in the second article, it says the missing persons report came in the same day the body ws found. Her parents were right on this. It's not like she wasn't missed immediately.

Yeah, I am not even convinced she went there to have sex with any one, she just got in over her head and is a victim of a brutal crime, she made a mistake, trusted some one, she shouldnt have. and she paid the ultimite price for that. Rest in Peace Tiana Rice.

This story is just breaking my heart. I'm sick for what Tiana went through -- what did this girl get herself into? -- and sick for her poor mother. Apparently Tiana was a severe asthmatic and left the house that evening without her medication.

One of the neighbors has spoken anonymously for fear of retribution. I think someone saw something -- or at least they know who was hanging out at that house. Her friend who told Tiana's mother what her plans were the night she disappeared, her computer (where they're saying she made initial contact with the "paramour") -- something has to lead them to the responsible parties. I hope they pin the monsters that did this and get them off the street ASAP.

The house on 268 Ridgewood Avenue looked visibly deserted when our reporters last visited in February. Trash was strewn in the basement and coupon books scattered the floor. Condoms, pornography and empty bottles of alcohol overflowed the trash. Late this evening, according to a source close to the family, Rice’s mother watched while police pulled the girl’s clothes from amid the refuse. Police could not immediately say why the clothes were not discovered sooner.

People who live nearby corroborate the claim that the house was abandoned in November, but suggest that several teenagers had access to the house afterward, and would bring girls there from time to time.

This is a horrible story and I feel they have painted her wrongly making her sound like just sleeps with anyone. I don't feel that is what happened here. First of all where the hell did the other two come from. She went to meet up one fella who she was chatting with online. It sounds like to me it was a possible set up by him bringing the others along and hiding out maybe. But maybe she did have consensual sex with the first guy but I find it two hard to believe she had consensual sex with the other two.

How do you process all that? My heart just aches for her mother, who knew by 9 PM the evening she was missing that something was wrong.

She sounds like a sweet girl, who was too trusting and naive. She probably thought she was meeting a nice guy. Instead of that, it sounds like he set her up to be used by his friends. She was only 16 bless her. Too young to know just how truly evil and vile some people can be.

Her poor family. I cant even begin to imagine what they are going through, and how horrible it was not knowing where she was. And for the mother to hear her daughter calling for them to 'stop'. God, she must have been in hell after that. And still is as more horrible details come out. Heartbreaking.

Pretty strange analysis for these guys..

Let's say they autopsied the poor girl and she had semen from three different sources.
Who's to say she wasn't gang raped by all three?
To say she willingly did two guys and then the third raped her paints a bad picture and probably isn't very accurate.

Say they find three semen samples in her, and only two on her torn clothes recovered later. That might suggest that she had consensual sex with two, dressed to leave and had those clothes torn off and was forced to have sex the third time.

I would really like to know what was found on her computer. It was reported that she contacted possibly one of her attackers via the interwebz. A forensic review of her confuser, may be the fuel that has generated some of these reports. We just don't know.

I'm not convinced she was not there to pull a train on a couple of her homies and some third party decided he had a ticket to ride as well.

I just don't have enough information to form an educated guess as to what happened.
