A case of mistaken identity is causing more grief for a Natchitoches mother whose son was killed in Iraq.
It all began when police say Whitney Washington, 20, got into a fight with another woman in Walmart yesterday evening. Natchitoches police say Washington stabbed the victim three times with a pair of scissors. She was taken to jail. The other woman was taken to the hospital.
A few hours later some friends of the victim retaliated, and that's how Denise Godbolt got involved.
Godbolt was at home outside Natchitoches. It had been an emotionally exhausting day. The mother of Sgt. Lee Godbolt spent the day at ceremony at Barksdale Air Force Base honoring her son and other soldiers and Marines killed in Iraq. In just a few days, it would be four years since the officers arrived at the door to her home telling her that Lee had been killed. She heard a commotion outside.
"
There were eight cars lined up and three girls were in the drive way with baseball bats," said Godbolt. "And one was stabbing my car tires out here."
Natchitoches Sheriff's deputies say
the vandals were looking for a white Chevy Monte Carlo just like Godbolt's.
Godbolt still grieves for Lee. She thanks God the vandals didn't have time to attack the car with her son's picture on it. That would have been almost too much to bear. Now she's relying on her faith.
The stabbing victim was treated and released from a nearby hospital. Washington's been charged with attempted second degree murder. She's being held on $100,000 bond.
