    Policewoman breastfeeds abandoned newborn

Sometimes you just need a story with a happy ending. Kudos for Officer Farias.

BUENOS AIRES – An Argentine policewoman who recently gave birth breast-fed a shivering newborn she found abandoned in a field in the western province of Mendoza, the press said on Monday.

“It was pure instinct, something I did without thinking. I asked if she was alive and wanted to do my little bit to help,” Alejandra Farias, 22, said.

The infant, who when she was found in the wee hours Sunday still had her umbilical cord and showed signs of hypothermia, had been abandoned on a plot of land near the site of Argentina’s National Wine Harvest Festival.

“I have a 5-month-old daughter called Mayra. The fact is I don’t understand who could think of leaving a baby out in the cold. If we hadn’t found her, she couldn’t have survived because half an hour later it started to rain. When I got home and saw my baby girl, the tears started running down my face,” Farias said.

A group of people alerted the police that a baby girl had been found and was crying on a field next to the auditorium where the wine-harvest festival in Mendoza, the center of Argentina’s wine industry, was being held.

“I asked for an ambulance to go to the Children’s Hospital, but we decided to take a taxi because the area was completely jammed after the event. That was when the policewoman offered to breast-feed the baby. She risked a lot because we had no idea about the baby’s state of health,” police officer Luis Vairus told the daily Critica.

The cop said that the infant was in good health and weighed 2.6 kilos (5 pounds, 12 ounces) and that the doctors named her Candela, “queen of the wine harvest.”

“I never experienced a situation so critical, only recently have I started learning about life on the streets. I want to visit her with my daughter and take her some baby clothes. I’m going to keep in touch so I know what’s happening in her life,” Farias said.

I'm so happy a tender soul was there to save her from certain death.
I would have done exactly the same thing...I'd taken her home too if I possible.

I have always believed that women need to bond more, be there to support one another and do instinctively what we do best...nurture.

Be loved and happy sweet Candela...

Thanks Ucat for this lovely post.

I think it would be a totally natural instinct. Our bodies would override the brain.

Many nursing mothers have their milk let down when they hear ANY baby cry. I have a friend that would start to leak even if the baby crying was on TV. She always bitched that she had to pad her bra during the one time in her life that she shouldn't have had to (she was HUGE while pregnant and nursing).

I think this officer should get a medal.

wow, this one sent chills down me. I almost lost some tears. This is a heartwarming story and thank you so much for putting this one up. It isn't everyday that you hear of someone taking a bad story and outweighing it with such a heartwarming good deed.

I hope baby get's a wonderful home and that someday people will stop abandoning their babies like garbage and choose to give them to people who pray for them.... like my sister who unfortunately has been unable to conceive.

    Such a beautiful story.

That policewoman clearly bonded with this baby in a way her birth-mother never could. Abandoning a baby in a safe place where it will come to no harm, and will be found, is one thing. Abandoning it in a field on a cold night is a totally different matter, and extremely callous.

Alejandra Farias is a heroine in every sense of the word. I hope this baby is found a loving home!
