A 6-day-old baby was found dead on the couch Sunday by her mother, who also lost a second infant in a suspected co-sleeping death less than a year ago, according to a Milwaukee County medical examiner's report.

This one is all kinds of fucked up. The unnamed 30 year old mother has 6 living children and two dead children.

She's going out drinking until 2:30 am SIX days after giving birth. I can't imagine that she would have been drinking during the pregnancy.

She also stated "she should have brought a crib."

The woman told officers she thinks she has a problem with alcohol and that she had been afraid to sleep with the baby since her other baby, Brianna Buchanan-Prescott, died on April 17, 2008.

I would think with eight children, that a crib would have been purchased somewhere along the way. Or maybe after the first co-sleeping death less than a year ago.

The mother told investigators that a doctor had ordered a heart test for the baby before she was discharged from the hospital after her birth, but that an abnormal reading required a return to the hospital on Friday. The results were due back on Monday.

So it's possible that co-sleeping on a couch next to the drunk birth machine did not kill this child. But if it did, is two dead babies enough for negligent homicide charges? Or at least child neglect?

A couch is no place to put a newborn baby. It was probably filthy and made of toxic materials. A baby, especially a newborn would be very vulnerable, to toxic fumes coming off of that thing...not to mention baby was probably exposed to alcohol en utero...sigh....

Milwaukee DCFS claims they are short staffed, always too many cases and not enough workers. While I can understand they are understaffed, I cannot understand the families that fall through the cracks. someone should have been investigating after the 1st child and throughout her pregnancy. Yes, I have a set of twins, Ryan and Melissa. And I started VERY young!! Michael is 29 and my youngest Holly is 22. All I ever wanted to be is a mom! I now have 6 grandchildren too, with hopefully lots more to come!

But I was a very mature young mom, and was always very attentive, loving, caring and totally involved with them, I still am. They are the most amazing people God has ever put on this earth!!

They're in a very high risk group and likely recieve substandard medical care. Other than the co-sleeping arrangements, it doesn't sound like there's any indication here it's not SIDS. Obviously we want to blame the drunken mom with too many kids who can't even remember coming home the night before. But there doesn't seem to be anything that shows this child or the last one were suffocated - in these articles anyway. The 2 in the same household make me automatically suspicious, but the 3rd in an entirely different household gives it a different perspective.

Prescott and four of her children were living with her grandmother at the time. According to a medical examiner's report, Prescott told police she placed Brianna in one of two twin beds pushed together in her room. Prescott slept with the baby in one bed, her then 1-year-old son in the other.

When she awoke, the baby girl, who lay on her side in the center of the two beds, had stopped breathing. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The grandmother fed the girl, then put her to bed with her 7-year-old daughter. The baby and her daughter slept pointing one direction in the bed. When the grandmother joined them, she faced the opposite direction, with her feet at the baby's head.

When the grandmother woke up in the morning, the baby was dead.

I'm seeing a pattern of all children sleeping in a bed or couch with an adult at the time of their death. I would not doubt that the deaths occurred simply by being unsafe while sleeping with the baby. An alcoholic mother sleeping with a baby, never safe, in this last case with Ceinna, she changed her story 3 times. She can't remember or doesn't want to say what really happened...either way, the question begs...are they accidents? unfortunate circumstances? negligence? or murder?

She passes out like this, gets up at later falls on floor and resumes to pass out there. Baby died while she was on the couch with her as she rolled and turned her slightly smothering her. This would explain her on the couch then not on the couch as she woke up. I'm convinced she smothered her while in her alcoholic drunk state....

The theory that it was something other than SIDS is what needs backed up. There isn't any evidence of suffocation presented. There isn't even any evidence of roll-over. All we've got is at least this one kid was in a neglectful situation. You're not grounded in evidence - there is no evidence. You're rooted in assuming the worst. Which isn't to say that's not warranted. But it's not evidence.
And I'd love to tell you what the cause of SIDS is - I would love to know. So would every parent who has lost a kid this way. But we don't. We do know it happens though.

My 5 year old still likes to sleep with me, he feels safe in my bed and he feels loved in my bed, which is something he needs since dad doesn't show him any. He has slept with me on and off, his choice, since my divorce when he was just under a year. Sometimes when I'm really tired (after chemo) it was easiest to ask him to please come lay down with me so we could rest together.
