Daryl Lindsey is a missing autistic man

Harris County law enforcement authorities are searching for a missing autistic man who apparently walked away from an assisted-living facility in Spring.

Daryl Lindsey, 29, was reported missing early Wednesday morning, said Lt. John Legg of the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

A staff member at the facility said that she last him at the home about 4:25 a.m., but when she checked on him in his bedroom about an hour later, he was gone.

He apparently walked out the front door, Legg said.

He is described as 6 feet tall and 180 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue shorts with a yellow stripe on them.

Lindsey has behavior concerns that include self injury and possible aggression. He also needs medications and has seizures, officials said.

The facility staff members said that Lindsey has walked away from the home without supervision on other occasions, but quickly was found each time unharmed, Legg said.

He said that Lindsey's relatives do not live in the area and they do not where he is.

"We're perplexed at where he could be," Legg said.

Anyone with information regarding Lindsey's whereabouts is encouraged to contact the Harris County Missing Persons Unit at 713-755-7427.

It is a shame but there is only so much that can be done. There is no evidence that they can use.
Police say Daryl had a tendency to walk into vacant homes, where he would stay until somebody discovered his whereabouts. Investigators have combed the area and checked out unoccupied residences in the area, though they have found no sign of Daryl.

Investigators have carried out extensive searches in the surrounding area that include helicopters and rescue dogs. Police have had no luck finding Daryl, and find themselves at a loss for where he may have ended up.

Due to Daryl’s condition, police say he is unable to speak and worry he may have gotten lost or into trouble without the ability to ask for help. Cops fear he may have walked into a nearby lake or into the woods and died due to the freezing temperatures.

    Situation unknown

Unfortunately it looks like the world gave up on Daryl. the last entry on TexasEquuSearch is from 3/10
03/10/09 - 2:30 pm TES will resume the search for Daryl tomorrow at 8:00 am. The Command Center will be located at 21710 Meadowhill Dr, Spring, TX 77388. Daryl has been without his required medications for several days and his medical condition is extremely fragile. We ask that all available volunteers join us in the search. We need people to search both on foot and on ATV’s. Frank Black, Search Coordinator, can be reached at (713) 301-6813.

There are only 6 google entries on this poor man. Seems as if no one cares.
If he is indeed dead, I can only pray he went to rest under a nice oak tree and died in his sleep..we can only hope. The shitty part is, if this is true, he died alone. And no one should die that way.

so sad. i bet he was echolalic, so what were his fave words to say/mimic? they could just yell those til he came out. or til they heard him yelling "cassarole" from an abandoned house.

My son is autistic and this is sad. They need to think about everything this man is accustomed to. My son once went out our basement window and waked 2 streets over until he found a play structure made of wood. The reason you may ask.... well, day care did fire drills where they taught the children to climb out the basement and go to the back yard and meet up at the play structure.

The day my son went out the basement window (which later we secured with a big sign that said, "Permission Needed") was because a fire truck had drove by our subdivision with its sirens on. To Brendon, this meant there was an emergency and he had to follow proper procedures.... so he climbed out the window and waited in the first play structure he found. Of course that day was the one and only time that I truly experienced the panic of a missing child. I had so many fears of where he could be.... a swamp, someones car, walking down a busy road. I had just seen him 5 minutes earlier when I gave him his lunch... I was so fucking terrified and so relieved when I found him. The whole subdivision was looking for him.... I was lucky to have those neighbors back then.....

that must have been frightening, dneilz. i totally agree with you. i mean - telling people to yell "cassarole" was part silly, but most true. what you said - find something he is familiar with and esp if he is a little fixated on it that would be cool. and run around everywhere trying to get him to respond.

tho by now it seems late - several months. if he had a history of going into vacant homes - what was that deal? did they think that might be a cry for help to move to a quieter location? i am assuming he couldnt always express his desires with the right words. i would say repeatedly running away and living in an abandoned building would clue me in to get him into a smaller or more private facility.

and I would also make the assumption that he wasn't getting his needs met and felt rather lonely. Autism doesn't make you non human, ignorant people who think they understand it does... It is so sad... My son once wrote a poem... I am going to copy paste it here... it is a good look into how they think...........

    A Poem by my son

    " I am funny and outgoing "

    I am funny and outgoing

I wonder if everone is happy with their life

    I hear people laughing

    I see people smile

I want to pass high school and college

    I am funny and outgoing

I pretend to not listen to my teachers

I feel like something is taking over me

I touch the stars and the sky

I worry about the nuclear war heads

I cry when I think about my grandpa

I understand that this world is changing

I say computers are going to be more a part of our life in the future

I dream of the trees blowing with the wind

I try my best in everything

I hope this world will be best for everyone

    I am funny and outgoing....

Pretty amazing that my son wrote this because I didn't even have a clue at the time it was written, that he thought about all of the things he mentioned in the poem.

awwww that is so sweet. it breaks my heart but in a good way. and you are right - it shows deep insight and sensitivity to others and cut-thru-the-bullshitness that is endearing.

Believe me.... many of the people affected with autism are survivors. It is imperative they not give up hope. Brendon may himself come across 'mentally retarded or a few cards short of a full deck' (hard to say about my own child... but he is a brilliant person who doesn't find it important to show the world what 'he's got'.... the kid is smart as shit! He just passed his A+ certification in computer technology. He can, and has, built computers! AND now he is certified to do so. You should read some of his blogs on his myspace about computers...absolutely amazing! I am holding on to hope that this young man will be found.

Let me just say... many affected with autism have a 'Houdini' gift. They can escape just about anything. When they have their mind set on something, they do it.

Once my son saw a commercial for something he wanted. After he came to me asking him for my visa, master card or american express... I asked him what for. (he was only 4 at the time) and he repeated a whole fucking commercial complete with the line of "no COD's and must be 18 or older to call. I about died..... needless to say, I didn't give him the credit card because once he seen what one was he might just buy whatever he wanted after helping himself to my purse. lol

I pray to God this young man is found.... I couldn't imagine how I would feel if this were my Brendon. The world is a cruel place for a person who is a square in a circle world. Sad, but true.

4 months have passed, another poor soul it seems the world gave up on. For that I am sorry Mr Lindsey. I hope you are in good spirits and someone is taking good care of you, whether it be here on Earth, or with your God.

It just breaks my heart that this man has not been found. My grandson has been diagnosed with Autism. He lives with my daughter in North Carolina. He loves to go to the beach. When they stayed with my ex for awhile, they used to walk to the beach every day. My daughter told me that he would get mad when she wouldn't let him go into the water edge when it was too cold. I worried that (since he could toddle) he would make an escape and head out to the beach by himself given the chance.
I talked to my grandson on the phone awhile back. My daughter held the phone to his ear. When I said "how is Grandma's baby?", he said "bad baby". I told my daughter that and she "replied, "No he DIDN"T". So I had her put him on the phone again. When I said the word "baby" again, he quite clearly said "bad baby". My daughter and I were laughing....hmmmm....now WHERE did he learn THAT one???
