The imprisoned Sykesville, Carroll County, man convicted last April for the murder of an 8-month-old girl is seeking a review of his case.
Donald Ray Pevia Jr., 31, was sentenced to 60 years in prison July 5 after being convicted of charges including second-degree murder.
Pevia was found guilty of second-degree murder, first-and second-degree assault, first-degree child abuse resulting in death, first-degree child abuse resulting in severe physical injury, second-degree child abuse having care and custody of a child, and second-degree child abuse by a household member.
Pevia requested post-conviction relief of his attorney William Welch, citing that he no longer wanted Welch as his lawyer, according to case documents.
A three-judge panel review was scheduled Friday in Carroll County Circuit Court and postponed at the request of Welch due to the post-conviction request.
A new date for the panel review has not yet been scheduled.
Pevia was the boyfriend of Angela Mabe when her daughter Ky'leigh Rogers, 8 months, died March 3, 2009.
Ky'leigh likely bled to death as the result of multiple injuries caused by blunt force trauma, according to Assistant Medical Examiner Dr. Russell Alexander. She suffered a torn liver and spleen, two fractures of her skull and fractured ribs, among other injuries.
