Christine Schoppert killed, her child hospitalized after fiery collision

A 33-year-old woman was killed when her car was struck from behind and pushed into the path of a garbage truck as she was preparing to drop her daughter off at a Glen Burnie nursery school this morning, authorities said.

A passing Coast Guard member pushed through the crowd and pulled the 5-year-old girl from her car seat minutes before the car burst into flames, authorities said.

The mother, Christine D. Schoppert of the 7800 block of Centergate Court in Pasadena, was freed from the car by a police officer but pronounced dead at the scene, Anne Arundel County police said.

Schoppert was waiting to turn left into the Creative Garden Learning Center on Ordnance Road about 6:45 a.m. when a Chrysler Concord driven by Brian W. Weatherley, 24, of the 1000 block of Seventh St. in Glen Burnie rammed into the back of her Nissan Maxima, authorities said.

The impact pushed Schoppert's car into the path of a commercial garbage truck driven by Marlon J. Robinson, 30, of the 1200 block of Cochran Ave. in Baltimore, and both vehicles caught fire, said police spokesman Sgt. John Gilmer.

Coast Guard Petty Officer First Class Lavelas Luckey, 27, was on his way to work when he spotted the smoking Nissan and rescued the child, according to his supervisor, Cmdr. Steven Hendershot.

The girl, whose name was not released, was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital with life-threatening injuries, authorities said. She was in stable condition this afternoon, police said. No one else was injured in the crash.

Anne Arundel County state's attorney's office will review the crash investigation and decide whether charges are merited, Gilmer said.

OMG, Thank God for that petty officer's quick thinking in getting the child out of the car. I pray the child pull's through and may her mom RIP.

I'm glad to see someone stop to help this little girl. At least today one life was saved by someone who didn't even know the victim.

Lavelas Luckey is a true hero. It's a shame this little girl is now motherless, but thanks to Luckey her life was saved. Huge salute to you Lavelas Luckey!
